H.S. Highlights, Saturday Oct. 15

Mikell McGee scored his third goal of the game with 4:10 left in the first overtime period Saturday night to lift Fannett-Metal to a key 3-2 boys soccer victory over Chestnut Ridge.

The Tigers (9-6, 5-5 SHL) scored twice in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 2-0 lead. McGee got the first unassisted, then Kyler Goshorn assisted on the second. The Lions tied it 2-2 in the second half, with the tying goal coming with 5:36 remaining.

In OT, Goshorn passed to McGee, who dribbled past a defender and the goalkeeper and left-footed a shot inside the far post.

F-M coach Greg Best said, “This was huge for the playoffs, going 4-0 this week. This was a big road win. We’re getting some confidence and finishing games now. Mikell and Kyler are playing off each other well up front and the defense and midfield are playing well together.”

Football

Blair 31, Mercersburg Academy 7: The Blue Storm (2-3, 0-2 MAPL) were locked in a tight game until the fourth quarter, when they were outscored 14-0 by Blair.

Mercersburg’s touchdown came in the third quarter on a 55-yard pass from Benny Barnes to Jordan Misher to make it 17-7.

“We played hard against a good team, but they wore us down in the last quarter,” Blue Storm coach Dan Walker said. “On their two scores in the first half, one was on a punt return after we had the guy wrapped up, and the other came after our punter took a low snap and touched his knee down on our own 3.

“Plus, on our next series after we scored, we had a dropped pass on a sure touchdown. We were right there until the end.”
