F-F H.S. Highlights Sept. 26

Three of the four games were close, and Chambersburg won two of them.

That enabled the Trojans to hand Greencastle-Antrim a 3-1 defeat in a non-league girls volleyball match at CASHS Field House on Monday night.

Chambersburg took the first game 25-22 and then had a comfortable 25-17 Game 2 victory. But the Blue Devils scrapped for a 27-25 win in the third game. And G-A took the Trojans to the limit before falling 25-23 in the fourth set.

The Trojans, now on a four-match win streak, improved to 6-2, while Greencastle, which has lost three straight, is 3-5

Haylee Holsopple (9), Bailee Nitterhouse (9), Erin Lightfoot (8) and Lauren Ching (6) split up the kills for Chambersburg. Ching also rang up 34 assists, 11 digs and three aces.

Also for the Trojans, Jenna Lombardozzi and Nitterhouse each had four aces, and leaders in digs were Danessa Martin (13), Laken Myers (11) and Lombardozzi (11).

For Greencastle, Rachel Verhoef put up 13 kills and a healthy nine blocks and Keri Gearhart had nine kills and five blocks. Madison Goodwin piled up 18 digs and Gabby Baughman had 11 digs and 21 assists.

SCORES

Boys soccer

McConnellsburg 2, Forbes Road 0: The Spartans held a 14-1 advantage with shots on goal, but the defense of Forbes Road (1-6 (1-5 SHL) allowed only two goals as goalkeeper Owen Gilbert made eight saves. Ethan Barclay and Brady Daniels scored for McConnellsburg (5-1-1 (4-0-1 SHL), while Barclay had an assist.

Fannett-Metal 5, Cumberland Valley Christian 2: The Blazers (4-7) scored the first two goals of the second half - both by Jackson Park - to take a 2-1 lead on the Tigers (4-3). But Mikell McGee (who also scored in the first half) and Billy Peppernick (with 8 minutes left) tallied to give F-M the lead back and Wyatt Thorne sealed the victory with a pair of goals in the final four minutes.

Shalom Christian 2, Shenandoah Valley 0: Shalom did its damage in the first half of a 2-0 MDCC victory over Shenandoah Valley thanks to an unassisted tally by Peter Livermore, and another by Jonah Stains just one minute later, locking in the win for the Flames (10-1, 8-1 MDCC).

Girls soccer

McConnellsburg 10, Johnstown Christian 1: McConnellsburg used seven different goal scorers in a decisive non-league win over Johnstown Christian. McKenzie Garlock netted a hat trick, and Rebecca Wenschof scored twice for the Spartans (4-2-1).

Palmyra 7, Shippensburg 1: Ashley Rowles scored the lone goal for the Lady Hounds in a 7-1 non-league defeat to Palmyra. Hannah Pletcher had 13 saves for Shippensburg (4-9).

Field hockey

State College 3, Chambersburg 2: Despite taking a 1-0 lead at the half, the Chambersburg defense couldn’t keep up with the Little Lions, who scored three goals in the second half to claim a narrow Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory. Liza Ernst and Rachel Dusman found the back of the cage, while Madison Schmus and Sydney Kegerreis had defensive saves for the Trojans (4-5, 1-5 MPC).

West Perry 1, Greencastle 0: Greencastle’s chance at making a leap in the Mid Penn Colonial Division took a hit with a 1-0 division loss to West Perry. In a defensive battle, the Mustangs found the net first late in the first half, and held off Greencastle (5-5, 4-3 MPC) in the final 30 minutes.

“In the last 20 minutes of the game, we came alive and started to challenge West Perry's defense, but we couldn't finish,” Greencastle coach Rebecca Rice said.

The Blue Devils’ three losses in the division now likely puts them out of contention for a Colonial title.

Shippensburg 6, Waynesboro 1: Shippensburg’s Maddie Kline had a productive day, netting a hat trick in the first half of a Mid Penn Colonial game against Waynesboro - but she wasn’t done there. Kline added a fourth goal to kick off scoring in the second half as the Lady Hounds were well on their way to a 6-1 victory over Waynesboro (0-9-1, 0-6-1 MPC). Katie Wise scored the lone goal for the Maidens in the first half. Zoe Holtry had the remaining two Ship (5-5, 4-3 MPC) goals.

Girls volleyball

James Buchanan 3, Harrisburg 0: James Buchanan had a nice day on the court, sweeping Harrisburg 25-15, 25-8, 25-13 in a non-league match. Tyana Quivers led the Rockets (6-3) with 10 kills and three aces. Sarah Blair had 18 assists.

Broadfording 3, Fannett-Metal 1: Fannett-Metal claimed a decisive win over Broadfording in the first set, 25-12, but faltered in the final three frames to fall 3-1 in a non-league match. Emily Metcalfe had four kills, 13 digs and two aces for the Tigers (1-9), and Jade Rhodes had four aces.

Allegany 3, Southern Fulton 0: Southern Fulton forced Allegany into extra points in the first two sets, but lost its momentum for game 3, and fell in a non-league sweep to Allegany, 27-25, 26-24, 25-13. Sierra Lashley had seven blocks, followed by Olivia Mottern with four for the Indians (3-5).

Shalom Christian 3, Shenandoah Valley 1: Shalom Christian pulled out a tight MDCC victory over Shenandoah Valley, 25-23, 20-25, 25-19, 25-19. Haley Bricker led the offense with 16 kills, and she also had three blocks and two aces for the Flames (8-1, 7-1 MDCC).
