F-F H.S. Highlights: Gelvin breaks 26-year old record
It's not often that a school record that has sat untouched for more than two decades comes crumbling down - but Tuesday, Forbes Road's McKenzie Gelvin inked her name into the record books.
Gelvin aided the Cardinals in a Keystone League victory over Huntingdon, scoring eight of Forbes Road's 13 goals in a 13-0 shutout of the Bearcats. Her eight tallies broke the school's individual scoring record of seven goals, held by Shelly Morris (Parsons) for more than 26 years. Coincidentally, Morris is coach Carol Cline's daughter.
"Here's the odd thing," Cline said. "Today is also my daughter's birthday. I had to break the news to her on her birthday. But that's OK; records are meant to be broken."
Gelvin, who scored 35 goals last year, walked away with four goals per half, while Kristina Parsons and Mara Broadwater had multi-goal games for the Cardinals (4-3, 3-0 Keystone).
"They couldn't contain (Gelvin's) speed, and her little nose is right there by the ball," Cline said. "There was some really good passing and syncing there."
Girls cross country
Chambersburg 23, Cumb. Valley 33; Chambersburg 28, State College 30: The Chambersburg girls cross country team did it again.
With its top three leading the way, the Trojans snuck by Cumberland Valley (23-33) and State College (28-30) in a Mid Penn Commonwealth tri-meet, putting Chambersburg in excellent position in the division standings. Chambersburg and the MPC favorite, Carlisle, remain the only unbeaten teams in the Commonwealth.
And despite getting to State College only 10 minutes before the race began due to traffic, the Trojans’ top three Abby Yourkavitch (19:10), Kaylee Mowery (19:22) and Cadie Kiser (19:51) placed 1-2-3, aiding Chambersburg’s win over top division rivals.
“It puts us in a situation for a league title against Carlisle,” Chambersburg coach Chris Monheim said. “We’ve never gone 1-2-3 in a tri-meet with competitive teams like that. And our depth really came through today as well.”
Anna DeGrange (14th, 22:02), and Livvy Sommers (18th, 22:10) were Chambersburg's fourth and fifth finishers.

Boys soccer
Greencastle-Antrim 2, Shippensburg 1: Josh Kline found the back of the net in the 75th minute on a penalty kick to lift Greencastle over Shippensburg for a major Mid Penn Colonial victory and remain undefeated in league play. The Blue Devils advance to 6-1, 5-0 Colonial.
Just minutes before Kline's game-winning kick, Shippensburg (2-7, 1-4) made a play for extra time, with a goal from Sam Orseno in the 73rd minute of play, assisted by Jackson Van Horne.
Northern York 5, James Buchanan 1: Isaac Shenton scored the lone goal for the Rockets (3-6, 1-4 MPC) in a Mid Penn Colonial Division loss to Northern York. Sean Martin was credited with 17 saves.
Boiling Springs 3, Waynesboro 2: Midway through the first half, Boiling Springs led Waynesboro, 2-0, in a Mid Penn Colonial Division game, and although the Indians chipped away at it, they came up just short. Aaron Tylicki and Derek Buhrman each scored for the Indians (6-2-1, 4-1 MPC).
Cumberland Valley Christian 4, Heritage 0: Jackson Park tallied a pair of goals, while Kenneth Hott had three helpers in a 4-0 MDCC victory over Heritage. Eli Black had 15 saves to complete the shutout for the Blazers (4-5, 3-5 MDCC).
Broadfording 4, Shalom Christian 3: Broadfording's three goals in the first half of an MDCC game against Shalom was enough to hold on as the Flames fell 4-3 for their first loss of the season. Peter Livermore scored his second goal midway through the second half to tie the game for the Flames (8-1, 6-1 MDCC), but a late goal by Broadfording lifted the Lions to a win.
Mercersburg 5, Bullis 1: No other information was reported.
Girls soccer
Cumberland Valley 1, Chambersburg 0: With less than a minute to go, Anna Hull played hero for Cumberland Valley in a narrow victory over Chambersburg in Mid Penn Commonwealth Division action. The Trojans (3-5, 1-4 MPC) had just one shot on goal and zero corners, compared to nine and seven for CV, respectively.
“While it’s tough to lose a game in the final minutes, I am extremely proud of the effort by all of the girls,” Chambersburg coach Ed Franchi said. “The defense was strong all night, not giving up any easy shots. Hannah Spangler (a freshman goalkeeper) had an excellent game, even stopping a PK.”
Spangler finished with eight saves.
Shippensburg 2, Greencastle 0: Shippensburg scored two goals late in the first half, and stepped up defensive efforts in the second to pull off a 2-0 Mid Penn Colonial shutout over Greencastle-Antrim (3-5, 2-3 MPC). Bailee Rowles and Alexis Reese found the back of the net for Shippensburg (4-6, 2-3 MPC).
“Good all-around game by the team,” Shippensburg coach Mary Miller said. “Hannah Pletcher had her first shutout of her career, and the girls played their hearts out.”
Northern York 3, James Buchanan 0: James Buchanan dropped a Mid Penn Colonial game to powerful Northern as the Polar Bears’ offense was too much for the Rockets (2-6, 1-4 MPC). Siara Gossert had nine saves for James Buchanan.
Boiling Springs 2, Waynesboro 1: Addi Miller was the lone goal scorer for the Maidens (5-4, 3-2 MPC) in a Mid Penn Colonial Division loss to Boiling Springs.
McConnellsburg 2, Mercersburg Academy 1 (2OT): Izzy Keefer saved the Spartans from a draw in a non-league victory over Mercersburg Academy, with a goal in the final two minutes of the second overtime period, assisted by Jensen Boehme. Mercersburg (0-4) got a goal by Maddie Surmacz midway through the first half, but Rebecca Wenschof netted the equalizer just four minutes later for McConnellsburg (2-2-1) to eventually send the game into overtime.
Girls volleyball
Chambersburg 3, Cedar Cliff 0: A strong service game helped Chambersburg take down Cedar Cliff in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division match. Haylee Holsopple led the way with five aces, while Danessa Martin and Laken Myers each had two. Holsopple and Bailee Nitterhouse each finished with seven kills for the Trojans (4-2, 3-2 MPC), while Erin Lightfoot and Ally Davis were right behind with six apiece.
“We played at a very high level tonight,” Chambersburg assistant coach Bobby Culler said. “Our serving kept them out of system, and our passing allowed us to run our offense. Lauren Ching (32 assists) did a great job distributing the ball to our hitters.”
Waynesboro 3, Shippensburg 0: Waynesboro swept Shippensburg in a Mid Penn Colonial match, not allowing the Greyhounds to score more than 15 points per set, 25-12, 25-15, 25-13.
Williamsport 3, Greencastle-Antrim 2: Greencastle-Antrim traded off with Williamsport in a five-set battle, ultimately dropping the fifth set 15-6 for a heartbreaking non-league loss. Rachel Verhoef had 13 kills for the Blue Devils (3-4).
West Perry 3, James Buchanan 0: Jenna Mongold and Tyana Quivers both had valiant efforts in a Mid Penn Capital Division loss to West Perry. Mongold finished with three kills, eight digs and 11 assists, while Quivers had 12 kills and 15 digs for the Rockets (3-3, 0-2 MPC).
Northern Bedford 3, Fannett-Metal 0: Fannett-Metal progressively got better throughout the night, but it couldn’t overcome Northern Bedford in a Sideling Hill/ICC loss. After scoring just nine points in the first two sets combined, the Tigers (1-5, 0-2 SHL, 0-1 ICC) scored 13 in the final set. Emily Metcalfe had three kills and seven digs, while Lizzie Peppernick notched a pair of kills.
Tussey Mountain 3, Southern Fulton 1: After dominating the first set, Southern Fulton couldn’t keep up its momentum in a Sideling Hill/ICC loss to Tussey Mountain. The Indians (2-4, 1-1 SHL/ICC) had a well-balanced defense, with Morgan Fitz racking up 24 digs and Madison Breeze dug 21 balls. Olivia Mottern had seven blocks.
Shalom Christian 3, Broadfording 0: Shalom Christian won its first MDCC set over Broadfording in extra time, and picked up the momentum on the way to a 3-0 sweep, 28-26, 25-23, 25-9. Haley Bricker led the Flames (6-1, 5-1 MDCC) with 15 kills, and also had eight digs. Lauren Stains had 13 kills and 17 digs.
Heritage Academy 3, CV Christian 2: It was a back-and-forth battle, and Cumberland Valley Christian came up just short in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference match against Heritage. Mackenzie Householder stuffed the stat sheet for the Blazers (3-5, 2-5 MDCC) with four kills, eight digs, 29 assists and three aces. Brianna Miley finished with 10 kills and 16 digs, and Hunter Timmons led the offense with 11 kills.
Field hockey
Cumberland Valley 4, Chambersburg 2: Cumberland Valley's Maddie Brown-Sherer was too much for the Trojans (4-3, 1-3 MPC) to handle in a 4-2 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division loss. Brown-Sherer scored a hat trick in the first half to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead at the break. And despite late efforts by Jordyn Amsley to score in the final minutes, the Eagles walked away with the win. Liza Ernst scored the Trojans' lone goal in the first half.
Waynesboro 1, CD East 1: Waynesboro and Central Dauphin East had to settle for a tie in non-league play. Katie Wise scored the only goal of the game for the Maidens (0-6-1, 0-3-1).
Boys cross country
Cumb. Valley 15, Chambersburg 46; State College 21, Chambersburg 37: The Chambersburg boys cross country team had the odds against it Tuesday in a Mid Penn Commonwealth tri-meet against two of the top teams in the division. Traffic forced the team to be an hour late, and with just 10 minutes of prep time before the start of the race, the team was rushed before the race even began. Andrew Feldman led the Trojans placing eighth overall at 14:39. Trentin Overcash followed for a ninth-place finish at 17:44.
“They ran as well as we could expect,” Chambersburg boys coach John Ambrosio said. “They handled it in unideal conditions.”
Boiling Springs 25, James Buchanan 31: No other information was reported.
Southern Fulton 20, West Branch 41: The Southern Fulton boys cross country team earned a near-perfect score, placing four of the top five runners to claim a decisive 20-41 ICC victory over West Branch. Chase Varner cut the tape in 18:46 for the Indians (2-1, 2-0 ICC), followed by Bengy Voight at 18:53. West Branch's Cyrus Lanager came in third overall with a time of 19:07.
Girls cross country
Boiling Springs 24, James Buchanan 32: No other information was reported.
Southern Fulton 28, West Branch 31: Despite not placing in the top two, Southern Fulton pulled off an ICC victory over West Branch thanks to Maddie Baker's third-place finish (25:05), followed by Elizabeth Flaherty in fourth (25:19). The Indians (2-1, 2-0 ICC) placed all of their top five runners in the top 10.
Girls tennis
Mercersburg 11, Grier 0: Mercersburg’s Emma Hicks and Eliza Smith swept their opponents at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, respectively, aiding the Blue Storm (1-1) in a non-league sweep of Grier.
Golf
Mercersburg 177, St. Maria Goretti 193: Joseph Bucci carded the lowest score of the day with a 41, while Samir Tamer Simon turned in a 43 for the Blue Storm in an Independent Parochial School League victory.
