F-F H.S. Highlights: PK lifts McConnellsburg over F-M, 1-0
As is usual lately for this rivalry game, McConnellsburg and Fannett-Metal played a tense, close boys soccer match Monday night under the lights at McConnellsburg.
In the end it was decided by the narrowest of margins - the host Spartans took a 1-0 Sideling Hill League win when Ethan Barclay converted a penalty kick with 1:56 left in the second overtime.
“It was typical for a Fannett-Metal game atmosphere,” Spartan coach Cory Houck said. “Both benches were cheering and the fans were loud and crazy.”
The play that led to the penalty kick came after Nic Culler was sandwiched between two Tigers defenders and was knocked down in the penalty area.
Fannett-Metal (1-1, 0-1 SHL) got 15 saves from goalkeeper Colby Adams, while the Spartans’ Hunter Souders made seven.
McConnellsburg held advantages in shots (16-7) and corner kicks (6-3).
Houck said, “Josh Booth (outside midfielder) was a gametime decision because of an injury, but he toughed it out the whole game. He manned up and played one of his best games.”

Boys soccer
Waynesboro 3, Northern York 2: To say Waynesboro's Derek Buhrman was on fire Monday would be an understatement. Buhrman scored a pair of goals in Waynesboro's non-league victory over Northern, giving 'Boro a two-goal lead early in the first half scoring just 21 seconds after Wes Ocker got the Indians on the board. He also reclaimed the lead for Waynesboro (5-1) eight minutes after Nothern's Ethan Carroll tied the game early in the second half.
Field hockey
Cedar Cliff 2, Chambersburg 1, OT: Chambersburg fell in overtime to Cedar Cliff in a Mid Penn Commonwealth heartbreaker. Liza Ernst tied the game for Chambersburg (2-1, 1-1 MPC) off a penalty corner early in the second half to eventually force overtime, but Cedar Cliff's Julia Breneman sent a shot past Ari Burke with six minutes left in overtime for the sudden-death victory.
Greencastle-Antrim 2, Big Spring 1: Greencastle earned a 2-1 Mid Penn Colonial division victory over Big Spring after taking an early lead, and relying on a strong defense to see it through to the end. Lauren Cole and Lexie Sibbo found the back of the cage for the Blue Devils (3-2, 2-1 MPC) in the first half, assisted by Rachel Marconi and Moriah Ricker, respectively.
“In the first half, both teams created numerous scoring chances,” Greencastle coach Rebecca Rice said. “The second half was played mostly in the midfield. Credit to our defense for holding a high scoring team to one goal in an important division game.”
Shippensburg 6, CD East 0: Multi-goal nights from Maddie Kline and Kourtney Shoap aided the Lady Hounds in a 6-0 shutout against CD East in a Mid Penn Colonial game. Kline and Shoap each had two goals, while Rachel Kline and Zoe Holtry also found the back of the cage for Shippensburg (2-2, 2-1 MPC).
"Kourtney Shoap and Courtney Coy played excellent and led our team to the win," Shippensburg coach Angela Hostetter said.
Forbes Road 7, Huntingdon 0: A pair of goals each from Mara Broadwater, Kristina Parsons and Sierra Everhart lifted Forbes Road to a decisive Keystone League victory over Huntingdon for the Cardinals' first win of the season. Parsons also had three assists, while Maddie Miller rounded out the scoring for Forbes Road (1-2).
Golf
Chambersburg captures Colonial win: Chambersburg scored 311 to defeat Greencastle-Antrim by 25 strokes in a Mid Penn Colonial Division match held at Waynesboro Country Club.
Karsen Rush fired a 1-under par 71 to earn medalist honors for the Trojans, while teammate Luke Ocker took second with a 74, and Spencer Rajtik and Grayson Hopple tied for seventh with a score of 83 and Mary Kate Norcross was one shot back.
“It was real solid from top to bottom, and when the 3, 4 and 5 are that close together in score, that’s good,” Chambersburg coach Mark Yost said. “Karsen had a good round. He was 3-over at one point but brought it back, and he birdied his next-to-last hole (par-3, No. 3), with a tap-in. Luke had a real nice round, too.”
Greencastle placed second for the first time this season, as John Williams and Chad Harbaugh each shot 81 to tie for fourth.
Olivia Gardenhour led third-place Waynesboro with an 83, and Jacob Suder shot 84 for James Buchanan.
Girls volleyball
James Buchanan 3, CD East 0: James Buchanan overwhelmed Central Dauphin East in a non-league sweep, beating the Panthers 25-15, 25-13, 25-5. Tyana Quivers led the team with eight kills and three digs. Sarah Blair had 15 assists, while Kristyn was an asset at the service line with four aces for the Rockets (2-2).
McConnellsburg 3, Cumberland Valley Christian 0: After going 3-5 at their annual volleyball tournament over the weekend, the Spartan were ready to get back on track, and did so with a 3-0 non-league win over CVC, 25-18, 25-21, 25-22. Kacey Hann led McConnellsburg (3-0) with six kills, followed by Carly Swope with four. Swope also had 10 digs and four aces. Bridgette Ritchey had 15 digs and Lindsey Randler had 39 assists.
"We recovered well from what we thought was not a great showing at our tournament last weekend," McConnellsburg coach Heidi Johnston said. "We came out with much improved passing and offense tonight against a very good CVCS defense."
Girls tennis
James Buchanan 5, Susquehanna Twp. 0: James Buchanan extended its winning streak to nine with a 5-0 sweep of Susquehanna Twp. in a Mid Penn Colonial match. James Buchanan (9-1, 4-1 MPC) singles players gave up just five points through three matches, while the No. 2 doubles team of Leah Wingert and Amber Clark defeated Grace Mathais and Tributes Segar-Barr 6-0, 6-0.
Palmyra 5, Chambersburg 0: Chambersburg dropped its seventh-straight match in a 5-0 non-league loss to Palmyra. Chambersburg's Emma Guare put up a fight at No. 2 singles against Palmyra's Maddie Beidler, but it was not enough in the 6-1, 6-1 loss.
