Leah Hunt powers Trojans to rebound victory

Just beyond the fence at Shippensburg's softball field is about 15 feet of grass.

Then there's a road. Beyond that road Friday was a parked white van that was just outside of Leah Hunt's danger zone.

After going up by three runs in the top of the second, Hunt smashed her fourth home run of the season.

"Well, I missed the van that coach asked me to hit, so that's a bit disappointing," Hunt said.

Realistically, it didn't disappoint at all. Hunt drove in three runs on the dinger, which was more than enough to take down the Lady Hounds, 8-1, in non-league action.

"Leah Hunt is a great hitter, and we tried to be a little careful with her," Shippensburg coach Mike Peters said. "But we put one over the plate, and she's going to hit the mistake."

The victory was much-needed for the Trojans (9-1), who were coming off their first loss of the season.

"We weren't down; we're not going to go through the (Mid Penn) Commonwealth (Division) and be undefeated, and we know that," Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. "We're in a little lull with our bats; we're not getting the big hits like we were earlier."

Shippensburg (6-3) certainly suffered from that problem Friday. Although the Hounds managed five hits off Hunt, they never had more than one in an inning.

"We had a lot of at-bats to battle our way out of that (6-0 hole)," Peters said. "I thought we held them down with their offense the rest of the game, but you really have to string hits together when you're down that much."

Chambersburg's defense also hindered any hope of a Lady Hound comeback. The Trojans turned three double plays.

"The defense was doing great behind me," Hunt said. "Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen so many double plays in a game all year."

Skultety said, "Our defense is phenomenal; that's what we take pride in. With our pitchers, we know if we play defense behind them, it's going to be hard for teams to score runs."
