SOFTBALL: Local players soar for Blue Team in Red-Blue Senior All-Star games

FAYETTEVILLE >> Guilford Park became host to the second annual Red & Blue Senior All-Star softball game, sponsored by the Mid-Penn Area Suns Carpenter Cup Franchise.

The doubleheader gives local teams one more opportunity to shine, and boy, did the local competition for the Blue Team.

Blue won both games, grabbing a 3-1 win over Red behind the arms of Mercersburg Academy's Sydney Reath and Gettysburg's Madelyn Yannetti.

Reath threw the first four innings and allowed just two hits and one run, which was unearned. She struck out two and walked two to earn the win. Yannetti then fired three perfect innings to grab the save.

In Game 1, Shippensburg's Nicole Backer drew a walk in the second inning and scored on a single from Greecnastle's Erin Brontrager. In the sixth, Yannetti doubled to lead off and was brought home by a double from James Buchanan's Abbie Doyka.

In the nightcap, Red and Blue were tied 4-4 after three innings before Blue took off for a 14-6 victory. Blue racked up 16 hits in the victory.

Reath had the big bat for Blue in Game 2 with three doubles, and Bontrager also managed three hits. Baker, Yannetti, Big Spring's Kennsie Epley and Boiling Springs' Kim Rodgers had two hits apiece.

Chambersburg's Chelsea Sommerville scored four runs in Game 2 alone.

"It was nice for all the young ladies to finish their high school careers on such a positive note," said Blue manger Troy Pittman, who is an assistant at James Buchanan. "They all played well, and we look forward for them to continue to play softball at the collegiate level."
