DISTRICT 5-A SOFTBALL: Hyndman ends Forbes Road's season in first round

HYNDMAN >> Both teams had four hits and one error.

The difference was that Hyndman got four runners on base via walks and two of them eventually scored.

That helped the Hornets defeat Forbes Road 4-1 in a first-round playoff game of the District 5 Class A softball tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cardinals bow out with their best record (10-9) in school history, while Hyndman (16-4) will meet Shade in a semifinal on Tuesday.

"We played really well, but we just couldn't get the bats to connect," FR coach Beth Bryant said. "We hit a lot of fly balls."

Hyndman's Kadi Cosgrove limited the Cardinals to four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 10.

"She throws well and has good control," Bryant said. "She was one of the top pitchers we saw."

Forbes Road scored its run in the top of the first inning when Olivia Hall singled, took second on a passed ball and scored when Haley Lashinsky ripped a double in the gap.

Lashinsky also belted a triple in the third inning, but it came with two outs and Cosgrove stranded her.

The Hornets scored two runs off Lashinsky in the first inning and two more in the third, with only two of them earned. Courtney Schoen threw the final three scoreless innings of two-hit ball.

Taylor Dwire had two RBIs for Hyndman, while Braylin Hohman had a single and stolen base for the Cardinals.

Bryant said, "I keep telling these girls they have nothing to hang their heads about – it was the best season this school has had and we had a lot of firsts this year, so I don't think they should be unsatisfied. But I hope the underclassmen aren't satisfied with that ending ... I hope it drives them to want to do better in the playoffs next year."
