SOFTBALL: Thursday's roundup, Greencastle-Antrim downs Boiling Springs in 5 innings


BOILING SPRINGS >> Greencastle-Antrim's softball team got back on track Thursday afternoon.

After losing three straight, the Blue Devils came back with a vengeance in a Mid Penn Colonial Division contest against Boiling Springs. They racked up 13 hits, got a fine outing from Liz Ward and needed just five innings to claim a 13-3 victory.

"It was definitely nice to get back on the winning track," Greencastle coach Mark DeCarli said. "Hopefully when we see Middletown (on Tuesday), we can play like we did tonight and carry some of this momentum into districts."

Alicen Hoover had the hot hand for the Blue Devils (12-7). She smacked a double and a triple and racked up five RBIs. Katie Gelsinger and Erin Bontrager both notched a pair of singles.

On the mound, Ward picked up her eighth win of the season. She allowed just three hits, while striking out four. She walked only one.

TUSSEY MOUNTAIN 10, FANNETT-METAL 5 >> Fannett-Metal played from behind from the get-go, and although the Tigers clawed their way back into things, they couldn't complete a comeback in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference loss to Tussey Mountain.

The Titans scored all 10 of their runs in the opening two innings.

The Tigers (3-16, 2-13 SHL, 2-11 ICC) racked up 10 hits, including two apiece from Emily Metcalfe and Kassie Holtry.

Taylor Coffman and Amanda Laye combined to knock in all of Fannett-Metal's five runs.

SOUTHERN HUNTINGDON 15, MCCONNELLSBURG 0 >> Southern Huntingdon ended the game in the fourth inning by scoring 11 runs against McConnellsburg in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference game.

Jalisa Zinobile fired a one-hitter for the Rockets, with Tara Cutchall managing the only hit for the Spartans (1-14, 1-12 SHL, 1-11 ICC).

Erin Varner was 3-for-4 for Southern Huntingdon.

McConnellsburg coach Junior Swope said, "We gave them 11 walks plus the four errors we made. We're just plugging along and hope to get a running start for next year."

BIG SPRING 11, WAYNESBORO 4 >> Waynesboro out-hit Big Spring 12-8, but committed six errors and dropped a Mid Penn Colonial Division game to the Bulldogs.

For the Maidens (4-14, 2-8 MPC), Nicole Kreimer drove in two runs and Abby Ebersole, Sara Gsell, Jenna Powell, Tiffany Stull and Katie Wise each had two hits.
