SOFTBALL: Two big innings lift Chambersburg past Cedar Cliff, 8-2

HIGHLAND PARK >> A sluggish start to Friday's softball game put Chambersburg behind early.

But the Lady Trojans quickly picked up the energy and had two big innings to take down Cedar Cliff, 8-2, in Mid Penn Commonwealth Division action.

"Tonight was Senior Night for Cedar Cliff, and they had a lot more emotion and excitement going in the beginning of the game," Chambersburg co-coach Ted Bittinger said. "Through three innings, we only had 10 batters face (their pitcher, Tiffany White)."

The Trojans (10-7, 6-6 MPC) pushed a run through in the top of the fourth, but it was the fifth inning when things really broke open.

Laken Myers led off with a double, and Sam Bender smashed her fourth home run of the season to take a 3-2 lead. Then with two outs, Chelsea Sommerville singled, Tara Harmon walked and Alyia Kauffman singled to drive in the pair.

Chambersburg wasn't done yet, though. In the seventh inning, Harmon reached on an error to get things started. Kauffman then hit a single, and Myers had an RBI double. Pinch hitter Katelyn Overcash then singled to drive in the Trojans' final run.

"In the later part of the game, we were able to put a few things together," Bittinger said. "From the top to the bottom, after that fourth inning, we started to get the bat on the ball for some hits to move some runners around."

Myers picked up her third straight victory with a complete-game effort. She scattered six hits and allowed only one earned run. Although she walked three and hit a batter, she had a season-high 13 strikeouts.

"She settled down after the first inning, and she didn't face more than four batters in the second through sixth innings," Bittinger said. "She pitched a real good game. Along with her high for strikeouts, we also have put together our longest winning of the season (four games)."

The Trojans racked up 10 hits in the game, including six for extra bases. Kauffman was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Myers was 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs, and Sommerville finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
