SOFTBALL: Thursday's roundup, James Buchanan rebounds with 3-1 victory over Susquehanna Township

PROGRESS >> James Buchanan's softball team needed to rebound.

After suffering a difficult defeat at the hands of Greencastle-Antrim, the Rockets bounced back well Thursday afternoon with a victory over Susquehanna Township. James Buchanan needed just three runs to take down the Indians, 3-1.

"This was a big win after a tough loss Wednesday night," JB coach Eric Reed said. "We faced a very good pitcher and put some bunts down that produced some runs."

The Rockets (14-2) put across their first run in the fourth inning. Jennae Piper smacked a triple, and she was driven home by a bunt from Abbie Doyka. In the sixth inning, JB scored some insurance when Nina Shatzer laid down an RBI bunt, and Doyka scored on a wild pitch.

Township (8-10) started to make some noise in the bottom of the seventh with the leadoff batter reaching base. But Shatzer induced a pop-up on an attempted bunt, which catcher Doyka caught and threw to first for a double play.

"The defense also made some plays, especially that one in the seventh," Reed said. "Nina did another fine job pitching."

Shatzer scattered five hits and also fanned five batters. Piper and Shania Fogelsonger both finished 3-for-4.

SOUTHERN HUNTINGDON 3, SOUTHERN FULTON 2 >> One hit made all the difference for Southern Huntingdon in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference victory over Southern Fulton.

Cassie Querry smashed a three-run homer in the first inning, and the Indians (4-10, 3-9 SHL, 3-7 ICC) could not come back.

"It boiled down to basically one pitch," SF coach Stacy Smith said. "Our defense tonight was pretty solid, so that's come along. We're still struggling to hit."

Southern Fulton managed just five hits, but Olivia Mottern held the Rockets in check as well. In six innings of work, she scattered four hits while striking out six and walking one.

Kierstyn Morton led the Indians with two singles and an RBI, and Allison Spade also drove in a run.
