SOFTBALL: Monday's roundup

ELLIOTTSBURG >> Greencastle-Antrim was coming off a disappointing effort in the Big Spring Tournament, winning one game out of three on Saturday.

The Blue Devils had a major bounce back on Monday, however, crushing a decent West Perry team 10-0 in a five-inning non-league game.

"It was a nice win to get after that debacle against Chambersburg (11-0 loss)," G-A coach Mark DeCarli said. "The defense was fine today and we played well against a good team. This is a big week for us, with James Buchanan on Wednesday and Shippensburg on Friday."

Liz Ward (6-0) threw a two-hit shutout at the Mustangs. She didn't have a strikeout, but she had only one walk.

The Blue Devils (10-4) racked up 12 hits off the Mustangs (11-4), and scored eight runs in the top of the first inning.

Katie Gelsinger (2-for-3, double, RBI), Alicen Hoover (2-for-3, double, 3 RBIs) and Mackenzie Oberholzer (2-for-3, double) led the way for the Greencastle offense.

The Rockets (13-1) racked up 20 runs on just 12 hits and took advantage of four errors.

"It was a good, fun game for the girls," JB coach Eric Reed said. "Nina (Shatzer) pitched the first inning, then we let our three seniors, Shania (Fogelsonger), Jennae (Piper) and Abbie (Doyka) finish it up. Everyone did their job."

Charity Miller finished the game 4-for-4 with five RBIs. Shatzer was 2-for-3 with four RBIs, and Doyka scored four runs.

The Indians (4-9, 3-8 SHL, 3-6 ICC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game 2, but the Panthers scored three unanswered runs to pull out the win.

"We need to hit the ball better," SF coach Stacy Smith said. "Their pitcher struck us out 17 times, and she was good, but we need to start making better contact."

Southern Fulton mustered just two hits in Game 1 – a single by Erica Hoffman and a double by Olivia Mottern. The Indians had just four in Game 2, with Hoffman, Victoria Bernard and Drew Hann all notching singles and Kierstyn Morton a double. Mount Union scored all 11 of its runs in the first two frames.

"Once we got all the errors out and got to playing ball, we actually played well," Spartan coach Junior Swope said. "We got our walks under control tonight, but we have to get all the errors situated."

Emily Kendall, Caitlin Lynch and Madison Koontz had the hits for McConnellsburg (1-10), and Koontz drove in the lone run of the game.
