SOFTBALL: Chambersburg lights up Carlisle, 11-0, with power display
FAYETTEVILLE >> Chambersburg's batters ripped five extra-base hits, and pitcher Sam Bender did the rest as the Trojans took a five-inning 11-0 victory over Carlisle in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division softball game Thursday afternoon at Norlo Park.
Tara Harmon belted three doubles and Leah Hunt smacked her third home run of the season for the Trojans (4-3, 3-3 MPC), while Bender hurled a three-hit shutout.
"Getting back-to-back wins this week got us back over .500, and we have three big games next week," Chambersburg co-coach Ted Bittinger said. "Carlisle has been struggling to score runs, but Sam did pitch a really good game."
Bender had seven strikeouts and three walks.
The Trojans took charge right away, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Caeley Etter doubled to lead off and Chelsea Sommerville reached on an error. Lily Nolan singled in the first run and Harmon followed with a two-run double. After Alexis Shearer walked, Laken Myers and Emily Secrist hit back-to-back run-scoring singles to make it 5-0 and the final run came home on a passed ball.
"It was great to get out to that first-inning jump," Bittinger said. "The girls seemed to play a lot more relaxed after that."
Harmon was 3-for-3, scored three runs and drove in two. All three of her doubles were hit to right-centerfield.
"She was just seeing the ball really well," Bittinger said. "Those three doubles went to almost the exact same spot out there."
Hunt drove a pitch over the fence in right-center in the fourth inning for her homer, which came with a runner on base.

JV: Chambersburg ran its record to 5-0 Tuesday with a 15-0 win over Cedar Cliff, as Brianna Boyd tossed a no-hitter with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk. On offense, Dori Loukopoulos and Natalie Saylor each drove in 4 runs, Maggie Myers went 3-for-3, and Kirsten Pugh, Tierra Kauffman, Jordyn Amsley, Taryn Brookens and Hannah Weagley were each 2-for-3.
