SOFTBALL: Chambersburg suffers frustrating 3-2 loss at Cumberland Valley

NEW KINGSTOWN >> Chambersburg is going to want this one back.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Trojans left the bases loaded twice, gave up three unearned runs and suffered a 3-2 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division softball defeat at the hands of Cumberland Valley.

"It was one of those classic Cumberland Valley-Chambersburg games," Trojan co-coach Ted Bittinger said. "It was a one-run game last year, and we ended up with the same thing tonight. The bottom line is, the errors definitely hurt. If we don't have errors at inopportune times, we would've come out with a 2-0 win."

After being tied 2-2 for three and a half innings, the Eagles finally made some noise in the bottom of the seventh. Leadoff batter Tiffany Brown reached on an error, followed by a walk to Tara Houpp. Katie Wingert then smacked a single to drive in Brown and finish the game in walk-off fashion.

Although Chambersburg (2-2, 1-2 MPC) gave the Eagles some extra chances, the Trojans had opportunities of their own. They left three runners on in both the first and seventh innings and also stranded two each in the third and fifth.

"We've been hanging in there and haven't been hanging our heads," Bittinger said. "But we're not getting people across the plate when we have to, and the defensive errors have been very costly in our last two losses."

Lakyn Myers pitched a fine game, despite taking the loss. She scattered seven hits, struck out two and walked two.

Chelsea Sommerville and Lily Nolan both went 3-for-4 at the plate. Alexis Shearer hit a double in the third inning that scored both of Chambersburg's runs.

"Hitting-wise, the girls hung right in there, getting double-digit hits again tonight," Bittinger said. "Lakyn pitched a real nice game, only giving up those seven hits, but the defense just didn't pull through tonight."
