Chambersburg hands Cumberland Valley 2-0 defeat

Chambersburg's boys soccer team needed a big win to get back in the Mid Penn Commonwealth Division race.

The Trojans achieved that win Tuesday night at Cumberland Valley, knocking off the Eagles 2-0.

"The boys just outworked them," Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. "We won the 50-50 balls and a lot of the balls in the air. I told them Saturday there are some things you can't control, but you can control your work rate."

In the first half, midfielder Rene Quintanilla lofted a ball to the middle. Nathan Maynard ran onto it and headed it over the last defender. Then, before CV goalkeeper Matt Zambetti could reach him, Maynard kicked the ball into the upper corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

"That was a big-time goal," Grove said. "That gave us some confidence."

With 15 minutes left, Quintanilla took a pass from Asher Schwartz and scored an insurance goal.

"After we scored, I moved Nathan back into a more defensive role, but we were still dangerous," Grove said. "Rylee Reed played a great game at defender. One play he made while it was still 1-0 was huge. Our keeper came out and a CV kid got by him, so he had an open net. But Rylee came from nowhere and slid to knock the ball away.

"Nathan and Rene have been giving everything they have out there. I'm proud of all of them."

Chambersburg is 4-2-1 (3-2 MPC), while the Eagles are 7-2 (4-1 MPC).
