Franklin County golf preview

Greencastle-Antrim

Blue Devils

Coach: Jeremy Eby, 16th season, 236-297 (.443).

Last year: 18-12 in Mid Penn Colonial Division.

Returning starters: John Williams (sr., 85.6 avg.); Jacob DeCarli (jr., 90.5 avg.); Amanda Steier (so., 97.4).

Other top players: Conner Ambeault (so.), Noah Witmer (jr.), Bryce Miller (sr.).

Outlook: Eby said, "We have 17 kids on the roster and we're very young, but I think we can be competitive. We hope to be in the mix with Waynesboro and Northern York behind Chambersburg. I hope we can get a couple of seconds and some thirds. Williams and Steier played pretty well in the summer league, and I think those two and DeCarli should do something in the Mid Penns and maybe districts."

Season opener: Tuesday, at Whitetail Golf Resort, 12:30.

James Buchanan

Rockets

Coach: Mark Wise, 11th season, 127-352 (.265)

Last year: 1-29 in Mid Penn Colonial Division.

Returning starters: Jacob Suder (sr., 78.8 avg., 28th in District 3-AAA); Hunter Reath (jr.), Gavin Barnhart (so.), Noah Wise (so.), Noah Shank (jr.).

Other top players: Zach Devotie (jr.), Caleb Reath (fr.).

Outlook: Wise said, "Jacob is playing at his best right now, hitting solid shots with every club, and I'm looking forward to a big year from him. We are still an inexperienced team - most of the players have played only a couple of years. We're just hoping to be more competitive and move as many to the Mid Penns as possible."

Season opener: Tuesday, at Whitetail Golf Resort, 12:30.

Shippensburg

Greyhounds

Coach: Brad Horgos, 5th year, 14-106.

Last year: 6-24, Mid Penn Colonial Division.

Returning starters: Dillon Labonte (jr., 90.3 avg.); Tanner Greenawalt (jr., 97.8); Adam Maring (so., 98.3); Jim Smith (sr., 100.2); Casey Gigious (sr.).

Other players: Paul Williard (jr.), Brady Kuhn (sr.), Alic Sites (so.).

Outlook: "Last year we went about four deep with seven players; this year we go eight deep," Horgos said. "They have looked good so far. I think we have the potential to send multiple guys to the Mid Penn Tournament, because they're capable of scoring in the mid-80s and low 90s. We set a goal of building off of our six wins last year."

Season opener: Tuesday, at Whitetail Golf Resort, 12:30.

Waynesboro

Indians

Coach: Ryan Henderson, 17th season, 352-182 (.659).

Last year: 24-6, 2nd in Mid Penn Colonial Division.

Returning starters: Olivia Gardenhour (sr., 85.5 avg., 8th in District 3-AAA, qualified for regionals); Sam Franki (sr., 90.9 avg.); Paul Steiger (jr., 90.1 avg.); Robert Sirk (sr., 95.2 avg.); Jonathan Sirk (sr.), Taylor ZImmerman (sr.).

Other top players: Trent Oyler (so.).

Outlook: "We lost Nick Franki and Erika Cauffman from last year, so we have some holes to fill in the lineup," Henderson said. "Olivia will probably play as our No. 1, and Steiger has been looking good. A lot of the kids played in the Franklin County Junior Golf Tour this summer and should be in good form."

Season opener: Tuesday, at Whitetail Golf Resort, 12:30.
