H.S. golf: Chambersburg places 3rd in District 3 team championships

YORK >> It wasn't the best of days for the Chambersburg golf team.

Playing in the District 3 Team Golf Championships on Tuesday afternoon at Briarwood East Golf Club, the Trojans were up against three other teams for the title and a berth in the PIAA Championships.

But Chambersburg finished 20 strokes behind winner Manheim Township, which had a total of 295 strokes, and 15 behind runner-up Central York with a total of 315 strokes. Wilson brought up the rear with a 321 total.

"I'm disappointed for the kids," Trojan coach Mark Yost said. "We have a senior-laden team and I would have loved to see them do better. I know the seniors really wanted to play well, and sometimes when you want something really bad, you don't do as well."

Senior Jordan Shaffer shot a 5-over par 77, as did freshman Karsen Rush. The other three players were seniors Ian Patterson (79), Luke Ocker (82) and Tom Shearer (83). A team's best four scores were counted.

Yost said, "We didn't play well, but Manheim Central and Central York did. We would probably had to have every one of our guys play at their best – maybe five strokes better – for us to catch them.

"The conditions were good for scoring, and there were some good scores today, but it seemed like our guys were doing a lot of scrambling today ... more than normal."

The postseason continues Friday and Saturday for the District 3 Individual Championships. The boys play at Briarwood East and the girls take on Briarwood West.

The five Trojan boys who played today, plus Evan Vink, have qualified to play, as well as Mary Kate Norcross on the girls side.

Other area players in the field are James Buchanan's Jacob Suder and Waynesboro's Nick Franki for the boys, and Waynesboro's Olivia Gardenhour, Erika Cauffman and Taylor Zimmerman for the girls.

"Now we have to look forward to Friday and get as many through districts as we can," Yost said.
