H.S. golf: Waynesboro's Olivia Gardenhour takes 5th in MPC girls championship

MECHANICSBURG >> After a day of heavy rain, along with windy conditions on Wednesday, the Mid Penn Conference Girls Golf Championship at Armitage Golf Club was a tough test for the competition.

But a trio of locals battled through the tough conditions to finish in the top 10, and a total of four advanced to the District 3 Championships.

Olivia Gardenhour of Waynesboro shot an 86 to finish fifth, and Chambersburg's Mary Kate Norcross finished eighth with a 91. Fellow Maidens Erika Cauffman (10th) and Taylor Zimmerman (17th) also qualified for the district championship. Morgan Frazier of Cumberland Valley won the championship with a five-over par 75.

Gardenhour battled through light drizzle and wind gusts to shoot an eight-over 43 on both the front and back nines.

"I'm extremely pleased with how Olivia did today," Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson said. "She was a little disappointed, because she thought she could have been four or five strokes better, but this is one more step now in getting to districts."

Norcross, a freshman, got off to a fast start with a 43 on the front nine, but she gave up five more strokes on the back with a 48.

Chambersburg coach Mark Yost said, "The course played longer because the wet conditions didn't give the ball much roll, but the wind seemed to play a big factor. Mary Kate left a lot of approach shots short, but overall she was really steady, and she accomplished one of her goals, which was to get to districts."

Cauffman shot a 48 on the front and a 46 on the back to card a 94, and Zimmerman scored a 49 and 53 to finish at 102. Amanda Steier, Greencastle-Antrim's lone competitor, missed the cut by one stroke, shooting a 105.
