GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Thursday's roundup, Chambersburg breezes by Mifflin County after tough start to week


CHAMBERSBURG >> After a pair of marathon matches earlier this week, Chambersburg's girls volleyball team got a bit of a break on Thursday night.

The Trojans took less than an hour to take down Mifflin County in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division match, 3-0.

"The girls did a good job of staying focused tonight and getting ready for a big week next week," Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said.

The Trojans (8-2, 7-2 MPC) held the Huskies to just six and five points in the opening sets, respectively, and although Mifflin County put up a nice fight in the third set, Chambersburg claimed the victory, 25-15.

Caitlin Vrabel led the offense with nine kills and three blocks. Lauren Ching and Rebecca Stewart split the setting duties and had 18 and six assists, respectively. Ching was the Trojans' top server with 14 points and five aces. Laken Myers and Danessa Martin smacked two aces apiece.

GREENCASTLE 3, SHIPPENSBURG 0 >> The first set was a close one, but Greencastle-Antrim pulled out a narrow victory and went on to shut out Shippensburg in a Mid Penn Capital Division match.

"We are at the halfway point of our season, and the girls are improved," Ship coach Suwan Kongkeattikul said. "But they need to learn how to win the game when it's that close."

The Lady Hounds (1-7, 1-7 MPC) lost the first set just 26-24 but were then held to 14 and 20 points, respectively.

Sydney Shepherd had a standout game for the Blue Devils (7-4, 6-2 MPC). She finished with 11 kills and 12 digs. Gabby Baughman led the defense with 16 digs, while Chloe McKenzie finished with five kills, two aces and 23 assists.

For the Hounds, Rianon McKee paced the offense with four kills.

NORTHERN YORK 3, JAMES BUCHANAN 0 >> James Buchanan's offense had a tough time getting going in a Mid Penn Capital Division loss to Northern York.

"We didn't show up tonight," Rocket coach Tonya Miller said. "We had so many errors; I can't put my finger on what happened. Northern played tough, and we didn't have a response for most of it. We needed to play our game, and I only saw glimpses of it."

James Buchanan (3-6, 3-5 MPC) did not score more than 16 points in any set.

Erica Eberly led the offense with a mere five kills, and Sarah Blair had eight digs to pace the defense.

The Maidens (10-0, 8-0 MPC) have lost only two sets in division play.

Ciara Rosenberger paced the offense with 15 kills, while Brycelin Spidel finished with 11 kills and three blocks. Alyssa Taylor once again led the defense with 14 digs.

"They had a hard time getting a lot going on serve receive," Spartan coach Heidi Johnston said. "We adjusted well defensively to what they brought, which was a lot of scrappy hitting and over in two."

Kacey Hann led the offense for McConnellsburg (7-0, 4-0 SHL/ICC) with six kills. Bridgette Ritchey had five kills and two blocks. The Spartans had a fine day at the service line with six aces for Carly Swope and four for Arianna Lupey.

After falling 25-10 and 25-6, the Tigers (0-8, 0-6 SHL, 0-5 ICC) managed 18 points in the final set. Taylor Coffman had three kills, and Emily Metcalfe recorded four digs.

CHESTNUT RIDGE 3, SOUTHERN FULTON 1 >> After winning the first set of a Sideling Hill League matchup, Southern Fulton let the next three sets slip away in a loss to Chestnut Ridge.

The Indians (2-5, 1-4 SHL) won the first set, 25-15, but were held to 19 and 17 points in the next two sets, respectively. Ridge won the final set, 26-24.

Morgan Fitz had a fine defensive effort, finishing with 17 digs. Madison Breeze had 14 service points and eight digs, and Drew Gordon led the offense with nine kills.

HERITAGE ACADEMY 3, CUMB. VALLEY CHRISTIAN 0 >> Cumberland Valley Christian got off to a rough start, and Heritage used that to its advantage in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference match.

The Blazers (5-9, 4-7 MDCC) scored only 15 points in the first set and were defeated 25-23 and 25-22 in the last two, respectively.

CVC had a very strong defensive effort. Brianna Miley led the way with 11 digs, while Mackenzie Householder and Shelby Heckman each dug 10 balls.

Miley and Harli Bergau split 14 kills evenly.
