GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Tuesday's roundup, Waynesboro stays atop Capital Division with win over Greencastle


WAYNESBORO >> Waynesboro remains the top dog in the Mid Penn Capital Division after pinning a 3-0 girls volleyball defeat on Greencastle-Antrim.

With the win, the Maidens (6-0, 5-0 MPC) remain undefeated, while Greencastle (4-3, 4-1 MPC) suffered its first league loss.

Waynesboro was dominating in the first two sets, winning 25-18 and 25-13. Although the Blue Devils looked much improved in Set 3, they couldn't muster a victory and were taken down 26-24.

For the Maidens, Brycelin Spidel led a well-rounded attack, finishing with 10 kills and nine blocks. Olivia Foglesonger had seven kills and four blocks, while Ciara Rosenberger recorded seven kills, seven digs and an ace.

Alyssa Taylor had a strong defense game, racking up 17 digs.

On the flip side, Greencastle's offense was led by Keri Gearhart, who had seven kills.

CHAMBERSBURG 3, CENTRAL DAUPHIN EAST 0 >> Chambersburg had no problem taking down Central Dauphin East in straight sets in Mid Penn Commonwealth Division action.

The Trojans held the Panthers to 10 points or fewer in all three sets, winning the third 25-4.

Haylee Holsopple and Bailee Nitterhouse led the Trojans (6-1, 5-1 MPC) with five kills apiece.

Chambersburg was unstoppable from the service line. Lauren Ching had eight aces, Jenna Lombardozzi and Rebecca Stewart each had six and Megan Preso finished with five.

JAMES BUCHANAN 3, SHIPPENSBURG 2 >> James Buchanan gutted out a five-set victory for the first time this season, handing Shippensburg a Mid Penn Capital Division loss.

"We played hard, we played as a team, and we never gave up," JB coach Tonya Miller said. "We had a tough time finding a rhythm but we still overcame and kept pushing for the next point. I had more players step up to make excellent decisions and big plays when we needed them."

After Shippensburg (0-5, 0-5 MPC) won the opening set in dominating fashion, 25-15, James Buchanan (2-4, 2-3 MPC) came storming back to win the second and third, 25-13 and 25-17. The Lady Hounds didn't go down easily, though. They won the fourth set, 26-24, before losing, 15-11 in the decisive fifth.

The Rockets had a fine night from the service line. Logan Souders led the way with five aces, while Tyana Quivers, who also had 11 kills and two blocks, smacked three aces. Kayla Cummings had 23 assists and 13 digs.

Shippensburg had a well-rounded attack, with Rianon McKee (10 kills), Cierra Noel (9), Taylor Junkin (6) and Sarah Davison (4) all making big contributions.

"The team played better tonight, but fell short at the end," Ship coach Suwan Kongkeattikul said. "Our serving and passing have improved, but we need to be more consistent."

SOUTHERN FULTON 3, FANNETT-METAL 0 >> Southern Fulton got its first mark in the win column with a straight-set victory over Fannett-Metal in Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference action.

The Indians (1-2, 1-2 SHL/ICC) were led by Drew Gordon and Madison Breeze, who each had six kills. Mikayla O'Neal had a fine day from the service line, racking up 12 points on four aces.

For Fannett-Metal (0-5, 0-3 SHL, 0-2 ICC), Lizzy Peppernick finished with two blocks, two digs and an ace.

"Lizzy Peppernick stepped up tonight; she was really on her game," Tiger coach Keri Daniel said. "We were really down on ourselves and just couldn't get past our mistakes."

MCCONNELLSBURG 3, TUSSEY MOUNTAIN 0 >> McConnellsburg used a strong start to pick up a Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference victory.

The Spartans (5-0, 3-0 SHL/ICC) raced out to a 25-10 victory in the first set, and after a 25-16 win in Set 2, they put the match away with a 25-22 victory in the third.

"I think we kept enough pressure on them to not really let them in any games but the third," McConnellsburg coach Heidi Johnston said. "We served well enough to get the win, and Carly Swope had a very good all-around match."

Swope had six kills, 14 digs and five aces for McConnellsburg, and Lindsey Randler had six kills and six digs. Kailey Dils chipped in with eight digs.

CUMB. VALLEY CHRISTIAN 3, BROADFORDING 1 >> Cumberland Valley Christian dominated the fourth set to claim a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference over Broadfording.

After the Lions pulled the set deficit to just 2-1, the Blazers (4-6, 3-4 MDCC) pulled out a 25-12 win in the fourth set.

Brianna Miley had quite the match for CVC, racking up seven kills, 13 digs and three aces. Hunter Timmons also had seven kills, and Harli Bergau and Loryn Sanders had six kills apiece.

The Flames (7-1, 6-1 MDCC) dominated the first set 25-12 and finished things off with 25-18, 25-17 wins in the final two sets. Brooke Kuhns and Haley Bricker led the team with eight kills apiece, and Lexy Poe added seven. Kylie Eby had 28 assists, and Bethany Blank chipped in with 10 digs.
