GIRLS TENNIS: Tuesday's roundup


STATE COLLEGE 5, CHAMBERSBURG 0 >> Chambersburg's girls tennis team faced its first Mid Penn Commonwealth Division opponent on Tuesday afternoon and were defeated by State College.

Paige Sideras put up the best fight for the Trojans (0-3, 0-1 MPC) at No. 3 singles. She won a hard-fought first set, 6-4, before being defeated by Shannon Steel.

Chambersburg's No. 1 doubles team also got better with time. After falling 6-1 in the first set, Emma Guare and Kara Wiley battled much harder in the second. They ultimately lost just 7-5.

JAMES BUCHANAN 3, EAST PENNSBORO 2 >> James Buchanan made its first mark in the win column with a narrow Mid Penn Colonial Division defeat of East Pennsboro.

Rachel Martin started off the winning for the Rockets (1-3, 1-2 MPC) with a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles.

The No. 2 doubles team of Rachel Poffenberger and Violet Clark gutted out a three-set victory after falling in the first set, 7-5.

Meredyth Sanders came out with the deciding point at No. 2 singles, also in comeback fashion. She lost the first set in a 9-7 tiebreaker before coming back and dominating the last two sets, 6-3, 6-1.

"We got a big win from the steady Meredyth Sanders," JB coach Terri Beegle said. "My No. 2 doubles team is just deceiving. They keep it in play, and they battle back. Rachel (Martin) also came through real strong, so the kids are starting to put things together. We just have to build on this."
