GIRLS SOCCER: Greencastle-Antrim rallies late to edge Chambersburg, 3-2

GREENCASTLE >> Some late lightning – not of the storm variety – was kind to the Greencastle-Antrim girls soccer team Friday afternoon.

The Blue Devils found themselves trailing Chambersburg 2-1 in a non-league game at Kaley Field, but G-A scored two goals in the final 3:35 to pull out a 3-2 non-league victory.

Blue Devil goalkeeper Jenay Faulkner mishandled a soft shot and Jasmine Lemus was there to knock the loose ball into the goal to lift the Trojans to a 2-1 lead with 5:40 left.

But Greencastle then swarmed the Chambersburg defense and was rewarded with 3:35 remaining. Ally Rudy controlled a bouncing ball and hit a pass to Hannah Crist, who one-timed a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the net to tie the game.

With just over a minute left, the Trojans were called for a foul about 25 yards from the goal. Alyssa Denkovich took the free kick and sent it into the box. G-A's Paige Johnson got into position and skimmed a header that got past the defense and into the net for the game-winner.

"What a rush it was when she scored," Devil coach Greg Cole said. "Chambersburg is a tough team, with speed everywhere. (Isabelle) Weigle and (Claire) Jacobs were giving us fits all night. It was a well-played match between two quality teams."

The Trojans, now 5-7-1 after their third straight defeat, scored the only goal of the first half when Allison Swartz was credited with her first goal of the season.

Sixteen minutes into the second half, a long pass from Meghan Hirneisen was touched into the net by Crist for Greencastle (9-3-1), which has now won four straight.

For Chambersburg, keeper Megan Cottingham made nine saves, while Faulkner made 11 for G-A.

Cole said, "Jenay is a great keeper and she did a spectacular job of keeping us in the game. But she did make a couple of uncharacteristic plays that led to their two goals."
