GIRLS LACROSSE: Female Athlete of the Week, Chambersburg's Abby Wilmot sets scoring mark

Throughout its first three years as a program, Abby Wilmot has been the cornerstone of Chambersburg girls lacrosse.

On Thursday night, all of her efforts through the years culminated into one grand finale. In her final home game and on Senior Night, Wilmot etched her name in the record books. She recorded a school-record seven goals in the Trojans' 16-5 win over Mechanicsburg, breaking the previous record of five held by her and Meaghan Rhodes. She is this week's Public Opinion Female Athlete of the Week.

"After we got on a roll as a team, a lot of it just started coming to me," Wilmot said. "It was one of the first games this season where I felt like I played to my potential. I saw a shot and I didn't hesitate."

Wilmot, a senior, also scored four goals in Chambersburg's loss to Northern on Friday, giving her a team-high 29 for the season.

"Abby has been such a strong presence for us on the field all season," Trojan coach Katie Feairheller said. "She is one our strongest players, and we're going to have a different look next year when she's not here."

After finishing with a 2-15 record last season, the Trojans have been more competitive this season. They are 5-11 with three wins inside the Mid Penn Conference, and most of their success begins and ends with Wilmot.

Feairheller said, "She's always the person to look for to get the ball, and she always comes up big when we need a goal. She's also our leader in draw controls."

Wilmot admits that there have been some games Chambersburg has let slip away this season. But she's confident that the program is in a good place as she ends her career, and she hopes to continue to grow the sport.

"I've had the opportunity to get some of these girls into lacrosse, and that's a big deal for me," Wilmot said. "I want to coach lacrosse, and I want to sport to grow and be more popular."

Wilmot will play lacrosse at Nyack College in New York next season, and she will major in criminal justice.
