GIRLS LACROSSE: Without several starters, Chambersburg falls to Boonsboro, 20-5

CHAMBERSBURG >> A short-handed Chambersburg girls lacrosse team got out to a quick start on Friday evening, but its momentum quickly vanished in a 20-5 non-league loss to Boonsboro at Trojan stadium.

The Warriors opened the game with a goal in the first minute, but the Trojans (2-5) quickly responded. Kendyl Stewart tied the game at one with a successful penalty shot, and Avery Rife followed just 40 seconds later to give Chambersburg a 2-1 lead.

"We came out with some intensity," Chambersburg coach Katie Feairheller said, "but we really weren't expecting much. We were missing Liza Ernst, Madison Schmus and Maddie Sollenberger, and Hayley Simmons is out with an injury."

The excitement was short lived. With Lillian Funke and Abbigail Harrah running the attack, Boonsboro put up six consecutive goals, and after Rife scored her second goal to make it 7-3, the Warriors scored four more times in a row to take a commanding lead. Stewart scored another goal for Chambersburg with less than a minute remaining, but the Warriors scored two goals in the final 33 seconds of the first half to take a 13-4 lead at the break.

Funke finished with three goals and five assists, and Harrah and Jaime Dambrosio also had three goals for Boonsboro.

"We focus a lot more on assists than we do on goals," Warrior coach Susan Funke said. "We had 13 different girls score, and we really worked the ball around in the first half."

The Warriors continued their dominance in the second half, keeping the ball on Chambersburg's side for most of the 25 minutes. The Trojans mustered just one goal in the second half – a score by Rife with 1:30 left in the game.

"Liza and Madison are two of our starting defenders, so we really had a tough time stopping their attack with them out," Feairheller said. "They really started to dominate the ball in the second half, and we had trouble picking up their girls.

"Overall, I thought we stayed positive and kept battling."

Rife finished with three goals, and Stewart had 2 for the Trojans. For Boonsboro, Maggie Luzier had two goals and an assist, and Taylor Mazelon and Caroline Brunelle both had a goal and two assists. Alyssa Boock had eight saves in goal for Chambersburg.
