GIRLS HOOPS: Forbes Road holds off Mt. Union

Forbes Road 45, Mt. Union 34 >> The Forbes Road girls basketball earned its first win of the season over Mt. Union in a non-league game Wednesday.

With virtually no bench, and just six players on the roster, the Cardinals (1-0) had to play a clean game, but were still able to force turnovers and work defensively for the win.

"I thought we came out really nervous," Forbes Road coach Jeff Gelvin said. "But we got some early steals and we got them to turn the ball over. Our guards really set the tempo for the game, and it was good to get the first win."

Forbes Road limited Mt. Union to just nine points in the first half, racking up an 11-point lead at the break. Then in the third, McKenzie Gelvin scored three 3-pointers to aid the Cardinals in its most productive quarter of the game. Gelvin ended the night leading the team with 27 points, and shot a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line. She also had six rebounds and four steals.

Mina Wilt had six steals for the Cardinals and scored 11 points, while freshman Mara Broadwater came off the bench to grab seven rebounds and scored five points.
