Fairfield rolls to win over James Buchanan

It took two trips to Mercersburg to complete the mission, but Fairfield came away with a football victory to raise its record to 2-0.

The Green Knights defeated James Buchanan 57-10 in a non-league game that was completed Saturday morning after an electricity failure caused a suspension Friday night.

"It was kind of strange having to go there, and then turn around and have to go back again," Fairfield coach Darwin Seiler said. "It took us a while to get started again today, but we did."

The Knights led 15-0 with 3:24 left in the first quarter when the game was halted. Three more touchdowns in the second quarter made it 36-3 at halftime.

Quarterback Damian Mort ran for one of those scores from a yard out and passed seven yards to Tristan Griffith for the final points just before the half. Mort finished with 68 yards and two TDs on the ground, and was 3-for-7 passing for 40 yards.

Charlie Burnett, who ran the opening kickoff back 87 yards for a score, also had a one-yard scoring run, and finished with 141 yards on 14 carries. Zach Koons polished off the game with two scoring runs in the fourth quarter, from one and 23 yards. He added 69 yards on seven carries.

"I was pleased with how we played defense," Seiler said, "and we had some good plays on special teams, too. Burnett had another big day and Mort did well running the show."

For the Rockets (0-2), Oscar Erkes kicked a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter, and Cormac Houpt had a 70-yard touchdown run in the third period.
