Crusaders respond in win over Waynesboro

It's never good to give up the opening kickoff for a score. Doing it at home is even worse. But it says a lot about a team the way they can come back from adversity.

Lancaster Catholic coach Bruce Harbaugh said his team had heart Friday night as the Crusaders evened their record at 1-1 with a 24-21 non-league victory over Waynesboro. From the big plays by quarterback Brian Downey when needed, to Emilio Perez's knockdown of a potential go ahead score with minutes remaining, Lancaster Catholic put together a complete game.

With 1:37 left in the second quarter, Waynesboro had back-to-back contact to the helmet penalties on Downey, moving the Crusaders to the 9-yard line. Downey responded by finding Ricky Poillon, who made a nice catch in the end zone to knot things up at 14.

The Indians (0-2) outgained Catholic 289-172, were unable to capitalize on the big play in the second half.

They did start out with a big play, though, when Cameron Keck returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a score. Waynesboro got a 30-yard run from Brady Beckner, and a 43-yard pass to Keck from Jerry James in the fourth quarter to get close.

Following Andrew Miklos' second touchdown of the game, Crusader kicker Conner Engle seemed to pin the Indians deep. Keck had other ideas, and for a second time in the game, it appeared a special teams breakdown was about to lead to a potential game-changing score. Despite having five lead blockers in front of him, Engle had other thoughts and made a great open-field tackle to end the play.
