Cumberland Valley puts 48-7 hurting on Chambersburg
NEW KINGSTOWN >> After strong showings in each of its last two weeks, Chambersburg's football team knew it was in for an even bigger test against Mid Penn Commonwealth Division rival Cumberland Valley on Friday night.
The Eagles showed the Trojans that they still have a long way to go, holding Chambersburg to under 200 total yards in a 48-7 victory at Chapman Field.
"We knew coming in that this would be a test. They are at the top of the division for a reason," Trojan coach Scott Mitchell said. "We came out, got off to a real slow start and things just started to snowball."
The Eagles (8-2, 6-1 MPC) ran 19 plays in the first quarter, compared to just six for the Trojans, who finish their season 1-9 (1-6 MPC).
On its first drive of the game, CV ran the ball 11 consecutive times before Nicholas Rhodes scored on a five-yard run, and after a three-and-out by Chambersburg, Cole Kline scored from eight yards to make it 14-0. The Eagles scored three more times in the second quarter to take a 34-0 lead into the second half.
"Our goal tonight was to just go out there and leave it all on the field," said an emotional Darius Johnson, who finished his last game as a Trojan with four carries for 56 yards and the Trojans' lone touchdown. "We played hard, but we just didn't finish the season the way we were hoping."
Eagle coach Michael Whitehead Jr. said, "We watched Chambersburg on film, and they are a much improved team than they were earlier this season. We just executed well and were able to get a big lead."
The Trojans managed just five first downs in the game and totaled only 159 yards – 49 of that came on Johnson's touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, Chambersburg struggled to get any penetration. CV had 323 rushing yards on 41 carries and constantly won the battle of the trenches to create big holes for the running game.
Eagle quarterback Josh Ferguson was efficient, finishing 9-for-10 for 124 yards and a touchdown.
It was a bitter end for the Trojans, who now have just two combined wins in the last two seasons.
"We showed improvement as the season went on, and I think we did some team-building things that really helped this team grow together. It's just a process, and we have to keep working," Mitchell said.
