McKenzie Gelvin leaves field hockey team

It's been a rough couple months for Forbes Road senior McKenzie Gelvin.

This summer, Gelvin's father, Jeff, was replaced as the girls basketball coach at Forbes Road, and Gelvin said she would not be playing hoops her senior year.

She was recently given some good news when she earned a full athletic scholarship to Temple University to run track, but things have gotten complicated for Gelvin again this week.

Last Thursday, Gelvin announced she would be leaving Forbes Road's field hockey team.

"There was a lot of tension between a majority of the field hockey team and me," Gelvin said. "It didn't feel like a team atmosphere, and I didn't feel like I was wanted there, to be honest."

Gelvin is by far the team's leading goal scorer. In 11 games this season, she racked up 31 goals. The next best scorer for the Cardinals has eight tallies. Gelvin is also dominating the area's leaderboard. She has 70 points this season (31 goals, 8 assists). The second-leading point-scorer, Shippensburg's Maddie Kline, has 23 points.

"Well, now we're scrambling things around," Forbes Road coach Carol Cline said. "First of all, there's nobody on our team even close to replacing her speed. We just don't expect to do that.

"Talk about a hardship for the team. But even more than missing her as far as her position and her skills, it's just brutal the effect that this whole thing has had on her and the team."
