Central York blanks Chambersburg in volleyball, 3-0

CHAMBERSBURG - While Central York boys volleyball coach Todd Goodling did not spell out his team's game plan for Wednesday night's non-league match at Chambersburg, it's a good bet some of it probably went something like this:

"Pass the ball to Hayden (Wagner) and let him rip it."

Wagner posted 24 kills and seemed to be able to put one down any time the Trojans appeared to be making a run, and led the Panthers to a 3-0 victory, with scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 27-25.

Chambersburg coach Marta Cummings said, "He's a really good player. We were trying to side out as much as possible so he'd be in the back row more, and that's when we hoped to score some points. We did that better in the third game."

Wagner did a lot of his damage in the first two when Central York took a relatively drama-free 2-0 lead. The Panthers trailed only once (6-5) in the first game. In the second, they held a comfortable 20-12 lead before Chambersburg reeled off seven straight points with Ian Patterson serving, a run that included blocks of Wagner by Dalton Strite and Landon Miller.

But Wagner had two kills in his team's final five points to halt the Trojans' surge.

"I play club ball with Riley (Washington) and Landon at Yorktowne, so I know their game," Wagner said. "I thought I played pretty well tonight, and so did the team. We executed the game plan well."

Chambersburg made the Panthers work harder in the final game, holding leads of 22-21, 23-22 and 24-23 on a tip by Washington. But the Trojans couldn't score two in a row and Central finally ended it on a kill by Cole Johnson.

Goodling said, "I had a guy watch Chambersburg at the Hempfield tournament, so we had a game plan, and it worked well for 2 1/2 games. I also think our serving made a difference."

Miller, who had six blocks, said, "I know Hayden pretty well, so it was friendly tonight for the most part. I know some of his tendencies, so I was able to block a few. We just didn't play as well tonight as we did in the tournament - maybe because it was our first home match."
