TRACK & FIELD: Monday's roundup, 5 locals claim 6 gold medals at ICC Championships


LOYSBURG >> There were five standout performances on Monday afternoon for local athletes at the Inter-County Conference Track & Field Championships.

The area brought home a total of six gold medals.

Fannett-Metal's Tom Peppernick had the area's best day – he won the Outstanding Thrower award after claiming a pair of victories. He won the shot put with a mark of 46-2, and he added a dominating performance in the discus. He had a throw of 159-6.5, which was 40 feet farther than anyone else.

On the girls side, McKenzie Gelvin, of McConnellsburg, won the 800 in 2:24.53 and added a second-place finish in the 100.

Southern Fulton had a trio of female winners. Celina Merchant won the 300 hurdles in 51.41, Linsey Pryor cleared 8-6 in the pole vault for first place, and Sarah Wright captured victory in the javelin with a throw of 106-1.

Also on the boys side, McConnellsburg's Josh Booth was second in both the hurdle events, and Tyrelle White earned the Spartans a second-place finish in the discus. Southern Fulton got second places from Chase Varner (800) and Dristin Mellott (pole vault).

For the girls, Sam Roberts, of McConnellsburg, was second in the javelin followed by teammate Veronica Stone.

THREE STADIUM RECORDS FALL >> Greencastle-Antrim hosted its annual Antrim Way Honda Route 16 Invitational and saw three Kaley Field records fall.

Waynesboro's Lilly Harnish was the star of the show, as she broke the record in the triple jump with a winning mark of 37-9.5. She and Erica Helm, of Greencastle, both cleared 5-4 in the high jump.

Finally, Rachel Johnson, of Waynesboro, broke a stadium record in the pole vault by clearing 9-6.

Mercersburg Academy got a fine day from Finley Stewart, who won both the 100 (12.75) and the 200 (26.76).

On the boys side, Shippensburg's Jordan Turner won both hurdle events. He finished the 110 hurdles in 16.64 and the 300 hurdles in 40.71.

Greencastle's Liam Okal also claimed first in both the 200 (23.36) and the 400 (51.17).
