TRACK & FIELD: Saturday's roundup

MECHANICSBURG >> Chambersburg's Nate Long highlighted a successful day by local track & field athletes at the Bruce Dallas Invitational on Saturday at Cumberland Valley.

Long was the lone winner from the area, taking the javelin by over nine feet with a throw of 178-8. He fell just short of the Penn Relays qualifying mark, which was 180-5.

Trojan coach Bob Walker said, "Nate's throw looked like it was going to be good enough until a big cross wind blew the javelin sideways."

For the girls, Trojan Sammi Lowery was also looking to qualify for the Penn Relays in the pole vault, but she too fell just short. She needed to clear 11-1 but cleared 10-6, still good enough for fourth.

On the boys side, Campbell Parker of Greencastle-Antrim had a good day, finishing second in the discus with a toss of 159-6. Waynesboro's Akemelu Ogochukuwu had a pair of top-10 finishes in the hurdles. He finished fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.21, and he clocked in at 44.26 in the 300 hurdles, which was good enough for seventh. Fellow Indians Chris Payne and Jason Montiel also finished in the top ten. Payne cleared 12 feet in the vault to finish sixth, and Montiel finished 10th in the 200 with a time of 24.95.
