H.S. Highlights: JB beats defending champ
PALMYRA - James Buchanan's boys tennis just keeps on rolling.
The Rockets are off to a 3-0 start after a key victory on Monday, a 4-1 defeat of Mid Penn Colonial Division defending champion Palmyra.
"It was a big win," JB coach Terri Beegle said. "The elements definitely had to do with a lot of the points, but we kept our heads. Not only did you have to play your opponent, but you had to play the wind. Who handled it best came out victorious."
Hunter Sowers picked up a key victory for JB (3-0, 1-0 MPC) at No. 3 singles, falling in a tiebreak in his first set before winning in three. He even trailed 5-2 in the final set before surging back to win, 7-5. At No. 1 doubles, the team of Josh Summers and Micah Wise also had a comeback victory, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Chambersburg 3, Mifflin County 2: It was a rough day for Chambersburg's doubles teams, but the Trojans swept all three singles matches and earned a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory to start the season.
Naushair Hussain was the difference-maker for Chambersburg (1-0, 1-0 MPC). He split his first two sets - losing the second one in a tiebreaker - before winning 6-3 to claim the victory.
"At No. 2 singles, Naushair Hussain breezed through the first set, only to trail 4-1 early in the second," Chambersburg coach Brad Hill said. "He then rallied to win four straight games, but (Nate) Bargo continued playing well to win the second in a tiebreaker. In the the third set, Hussain dominated to win."
