Chambersburg's Nick Cover achieves goal of state medal

LEWISBURG - For almost the entirety of a diving competition, you'll find Chambersburg sophomore Nick Cover sitting somewhere with headphones on, blissfully tuning out the competition.

"I actually don't like to watch the competition," Cover said. "I just put on some music and focus on my corrections for my next dive."

Cover used that strategy Wednesday at the PIAA Class AAA Diving Championships at Bucknell University, and it paid off. Cover made it through all three rounds of the championship and walked away with a seventh-place medal. He finished with 457.9 points, which was his highest total this season.

"He put in a strong performance from start to finish," Trojan diving coach Ryan Crider said. "His twisting dives really came through for him. They were his highest scorers of the day. It's hard to comment on him, because he just stays so focused and puts in such a clean meet every time."

Cover said some of his top dives of the day were his inward dive, the reverse dive and his reverse 1 1/2. He also work on his entries, and Crider said that was one of his biggest improvements.

"Ripping it into the water is a term divers use for making an extremely clean entry into the water, and he did that all day long," Crider said.

Despite being seeded just 15th heading into states, Cover sat in seventh place after the preliminary round. In the round of 16, he fell to eighth before climbing back in finals to his seventh-place position.

"I felt really honored and proud of myself," Cover said. "I trained so hard these past two months, and I was so happy to see it pay off. I felt proud knowing that if you do work hard, your goals will come true."
