BOYS SOCCER: Monday's roundup

COLONIAL PARK >> Facing a tough non-league opponent in Central Dauphin East on Monday evening, Shippensburg more than held its own for a half.

But a goal by the Panthers led to a dominating second half and the Greyhounds were handed a 6-1 boys soccer defeat.

"We were up 1-0, but they scored a goal with about 1:10 left in the half," Ship coach Warren Jones said. "I thought we played really well in the first half. We passed the ball well and the defense did a nice job – Spencer (McKenna) had a couple of nice saves on breakaways. But they had a lot of speed and they exploded in a couple of bursts in the second half."

Matt West got the goal for the Hounds (6-8-1) when he bombed in a direct kick in the 30th minute.

Niko Zervanos scored a goal and had a pair of assists in the second half for CD East (9-3).

SOUTHERN FULTON 5, NORTHERN BEDFORD 1 >> Southern Fulton broke its four-game losing streak with a 5-1 Sideling Hill League win over Northern Bedford thanks to a hat trick by midfielder Chase Varner – his third three-goal game of the year. Varner netted two goals in the first half, and his third with just 10 minutes remaining.

The Indians' Raymond Truax netted his first of two goals in the first minute of play, followed just five minutes later with his second goal, assisted by Varner. Southern Fulton (3-6, 2-4 SHL) scored four goals in the first half, including a direct kick by Varner in the eighth minute.

"We played an excellent first half," Southern Fulton coach Scott Varner said. "We have not had practice in four days straight and I thought we would come out sluggish, but that wasn't the case tonight. They came out in the first half and played with a lot of intensity and set the tone early with some quick scoring and solid defense."

"I thought the guys played very well possession-wise," McConnellsburg coach Cory Houck said. "I felt like the game was not quite as close as the score shows. We only gave up one shot on goal, so we needed to do a better job of finishing. We hit the crossbar like three times tonight."
