BOYS SOCCER: Fannett-Metal scores in overtime to edge Shalom Christian

MARION >> A pair of well-matched boys soccer teams had to go to overtime to decide their fate Monday night and Fannett-Metal emerged as the winner over Shalom Christian in a non-league battle.

The Tigers (9-2) scored the game-winner after a free kick, when the ball popped loose and Levi Brady kicked it into an empty net.

"It was hard-fought and well-played by both sides tonight," Flames coach Chris Lehman said.

F-M coach Greg Best said, "It was definitely two evenly-matched teams and both played well. We have different kind of attacks, but it could have gone either way."

Earlier in the OT period, Shalom's Peter Livermore dribbled through several defenders, but had his shot from near the goal post knocked out of bounds by Tigers keeper Jamie Birgfeld.

Sawyer Rosenberry got the game's first goal for Fannett-Metal, but Chance Martin equalized for the Flames (8-4-1) on a pass from Tucker King. Before halftime, Mikell McGee gave F-M the lead back, but King evened it again early in the second half on a pass from Jonah Stains.

"They got both of their goals off throw-ins when we just didn't clear the ball out," Best said.

Travis West made eight saves for Shalom and Birgfeld had three for the Tigers.
