CROSS COUNTRY: Friday's roundup, Mercersburg Gabriel Allgayer captures Paul Short Run

BETHLEHEM >> Mercersburg Academy senior Gabriel Allgayer matched his success from a year ago at the 42nd Paul Short Run at Lehigh University on Friday.

Allgayer placed first in the White Division, recording a time of 16:11 for the 5,000-meter race.

Blue Storm boys coach David Grady said, "Gabriel took command within the first 400 meters of the race and he never relinquished the lead. He kept pressing the pace, while behind him a group of runners gave chase and tried to close the gap at various places on the course. Two runners made one last push in the final stages of the race, but came up short.

"Gabriel ran a gutsy race today. To run out in front the whole way in cold, windy conditions on a muddy course is very challenging. I was happy to see Gabriel execute a fairly bold strategy so well."

Mercersburg placed 25th among 46 teams in the race. The next Storm runner to cross the line was Cole Kissam in 125th.

For the Mercersburg girls, five of the seven entrants ran personal-best times, including Ryan Geitner, Jane Kistler, Emma Claire Geitner, Finley Stewart and Johanna Steinhage.
