CROSS COUNTRY: Chambersburg girls place 5th at PTXC Invitational

KUTZTOWN >> Chambersburg's Abby Yourkavitch proved she's prepared to compete with the best of them.

On Saturday afternoon at the seventh-annual PennTrack cross country meet at Kutztown, Yourkavitch claimed third place overall. Her time of 18:36.62 was the second-fastest 5K by a female in Trojan history.

"Abby was actually leading (Mady) Clahane (the race winner) as well as another group of kids for most of the race," Chambersburg girls coach Chris Monheim said. "She was mixing it up with the very best kids in the state, and she showed that she belonged."

Yourkavitch wasn't the only strong competitor for the girls team, which placed fifth overall. The Trojan boys captured eighth.

Kaylee Mowery and Cadie Kiser both finished in the top 25. Mowery clocked in at 19:51.44 for 17th, and Kiser was 22nd in 20:06.34.

"They were considerably further up in the results than they were last year," Monheim said. "They gave us a really nice 2-3 punch."

Although the boys didn't finish as high as they wanted in the team standings, there were several positives. Out of the 16 Trojans who competed on both varsity and JV, 15 of them had personal bests at the course in Kutztown.

Chambersburg's best finisher was Alex Hayden, who took 28th in 17:08.41. He was followed closely by Chris Wurtz, who clocked in at 17:09.45.

"We looked a little flat, which I expected because of our big win on Tuesday," Trojan boys coach John Ambrosio said. "Our top three guys didn't run nearly as well as we were hoping. Our time gap was decent. There was only one minute between our Nos. 1 and 5, which is good."
