4-point play: Carter Van Scyoc on fire for Ship

Just a few weeks after leading Shippensburg’s football team to an historical season, Carter Van Scyoc is at it at again. But now, he’s heating up on the basketball court.

Last season, Van Scyoc was certainly a threat for the Greyhounds with an average of 9.2 points per game, but this season, he’s nearly doubled that at 16.9 ppg. In the last three outings, Van Scyoc has had an offensive outpour to the tune of 23.3 points per contest. He notched a career-high 27 against Greencastle.

“We thought about doubling Carter,” Waynesboro coach Tom Hoffman said after his matchup with the Hounds last Tuesday. “Because any time they need a bucket, it’s going to him. You almost are helpless. You see them make the ball, you know where the ball is going, and he still finds a way to get it done.”

Van Scyoc burned ‘Boro for 19 points, and has scored in single figures only once this season.

Devil on defense: Brandon Stuhler is starting to make heads turn.

Not only is the Greencastle-Antrim junior averaging 11.7 points per game, he has also come on strong defensively.

Ship coach Ray Staver said, “I don’t know if there’s another steal guy in the area - and I’m not talking just Franklin County - that is as good or better than him.”

Through the first ten games of the season, Stuhler has racked up 40 steals. Not far behind is teammate Ian Gelsinger, with 34 to his name. The Blue Devils are averaging a staggering 13.0 steals per game.

“Coach Justin English has really helped with that 2-3 zone, and we spend a lot of time on it,” G-A coach Rick Lewis said. “We do the little things with the rotations, where your hips are; we really dig into it. We’re literally saying, ‘You’re here, and the ball is here,’ and we go over it and over it. He gets a lot of credit for that.”

Trojans earn 1st Commonwealth win: A Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory was just what the doctor ordered for Chambersburg, and the Trojans finally delivered on Friday with a 58-53 victory over Cumberland Valley.

Rather than playing from behind, Chambersburg got ahead early and held off CV for the win. The Trojans led 14-7 after the first and 29-16 at the half.

“Our word going into that game was urgency,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “Looking back at the (Central Dauphin) game, we put ourselves in a hole early on, and had to dig out of it. On Friday, the guys were really ready and locked in from the get-go. We built a nice lead and played really well. We shared the ball well, especially in the first half.”

Steal city: McConnellsburg played lock-down defense in its 64-23 victory over Cumberland Valley Christian, piling up 19 steals in the process.

Chase Novak led with the way with five steals, while Chance Hawbaker grabbed four.
