P.O. Male Athlete of the Week: Aaron Schepis

It seems like Forbes Road's boys basketball team is finally starting to gel.

The Cardinals have won their last four games straight, and most recently earned the championship title at the Claysburg-Kimmel Tournament, thanks in large part to senior Aaron Schepis.

Schepis put up back-to-back 14-point performances, was named the tournament MVP and is the Public Opinion Male Athlete of the Week.

"To be honest, I really think any of us could've gotten the MVP," Schepis said. "I'd say I got it mostly because of the acrobatic layups I had during the tournament. Also on the defensive end, I played pretty well."

Although Schepis is one of Forbes Road's leading scorers, it's actually defense that is his specialty.

"He's been really getting after it on the defensive end, so that leads to some easy buckets in transition," Cardinal coach Trent Black said.

Schepis said, "Oh yeah, I love getting those easy ones. That just takes the morale out of the other team."

A four-year starter for Forbes Road, Schepis has also displayed quite a bit of leadership for the young team so far.

"He handles the ball well for us out there," Black said. "Basically without him, we struggle a little bit. He's our general, and that's what stands out the most with him."

Schepis also totaled eight rebounds, three assists and two steals during the tournament.

And although the Cardinals have hit a little stride, Schepis knows there's still a lot of work to be done to complete the ultimate goal of a playoff berth.

"I feel like we've been playing pretty well on the defensive end," Schepis said. "Our biggest struggle so far is not being able to finish games out. We're not coming up with those clutch shots when we need them. It seems like we're just squeaking by at the end."
