F-F Highlights: Forbes Road starts with win

Game of the day

Boys basketball, Forbes Road 53, Everett 50: The Cardinals trailed for most of the game, but outscored Everett 21-14 in the fourth quarter. Forbes Road sank 5 of 6 foul shots down the stretch to maintain its lead, which it grabbed when Brycen Hohman drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give his team a 47-46 lead.

"We were down eight in the second quarter when Logan Grubb came off the bench and hit a three and then a layup," FR coach Trent Black said. "Then in the second half we handled their pressure better. We did what we needed to do late to keep the lead."

For the Cardinals (1-0), who hit 5 of 10 from 3-point range, Hohman and Aaron Schepis each had 10 points, while Matt Brown had nine points and seven rebounds.

Tournament

Boys, New Oxford 58, Shippensburg 51: In each of the first three years that Sean Bair brought his New Oxford team to the GWABC Tip-Off tournament at Gettysburg, the Colonials lost both games. But the team reversed that trend and gave its coach his first win in the gym where he played his high school basketball when they defeated Shippensburg, 58-51, in opening round action Friday night.

New Oxford will face Lancaster Mennonite in the championship tilt Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Blazers earned their spot by defeating Gettysburg, 62-42. Ship will face Gettysburg at 6.

The Colonials trailed early against the Greyhounds, but took the lead for good on John Wessel's triple with 1:38 to play in the half and that jump-started a 20-6 spurt that spanned the quarter break, and they carried a 31-19 lead into the break.

Ship started well in the second half, holding Ox off the boards for the first 3 1/2 minutes and trimmed the deficit to 31-24, but the Colonials responded with a strong finish and led 41-28 after three quarters.

The lead grew to 46-28 before the Hounds put together an 18-5 run that cut the lead to 51-46 with 1:50 to go.

"We talked at halftime about playing one possession at a time and we did that for awhile and cut the lead," Ship coach Ray Staver said. "But then we started playing too frenetic and it got away from us. We were playing like we were down 15 with three minutes left in the game and it was still in the third quarter."

Quote
