BOYS HOOPS: Shippensburg takes 3rd in tourney

GETTYSBURG -- Friday night, Shippensburg led Gettysburg with just seconds to go, but the Warriors scored on a bizarre 3-pointer to capture a victory.

Saturday night, in the consolation game of the Gettysburg Warrior Tip-Off Tournament, the Greyhounds led New Oxford by three points and the Colonials' Ben Lehman attempted a 3-pointer. But this time, Ship's Wade Mills blocked the shot, which clinched his team's 60-57 victory.

Ship (1-1) trailed 43-35 early in the third quarter before whittling the deficit to 50-49 heading for the fourth quarter.

But the Hounds didn't take the lead until Hickman's bucket and trailed by as many as four (57-53) in the fourth quarter.

"With the schedule that we play, we expect a ton of close games this season," Ship coach Ray Staver said. "We talked about playing hard to the very end and we did that. We never gave up.

"We trailed most of the game. But (Shuntan) Hickman made a steal and fed Mills for a dunk to get us to within one (57-56). Then Hickman made a jumper to give us the lead and Cody Gustafson sank two foul shots with 10 seconds left to make it 60-57."

Then Mills made his clutch play at the buzzer to prevent any result like the night before. Mills and Hickman were named to the All-Tournament Team.

"Wade played well and came up with the big block at the end. Shuntan hit some big shots for us and Cody played really well tonight," Staver said.

The Colonials (0-2) led 25-23 at halftime, but an 11-7 advantage in the fourth period for Shippensburg made the difference. Ship shot 24-of-45 (53 percent) from the field for the night.

Staver said, "New Oxford is a good team and they can really shoot. At halftime, they had five different players with a 3-pointer."

Hickman scored 18 points and Mills had 16, while Gustafson added 13. For New Oxford, Devon Duvall tossed in 28 points.

Gettysburg took the championship tilt against Cedar Cliff, 52-33, with Max Lampe leading the way with 20 points as he won the MVP award.
