Around the Diamond: News and notes from F-F baseball
Shalom Christian's Colby Maun and Logan Martin threw a combined no-hitter for the Flames in a 7-0 win over Cumberland Valley Christian. Maun threw five shutout innings, struck out 12 and walked just one batter.
"It was a crazy game. Colby getting 12 strikeouts really helped," Shalom coach Shawn Musick said. "And with awesome defense the next couple innings, we able to keep them from getting a hit."
Martin closed out the final two innings with three strikeouts and two walks.
"He's a freshman and this is the best he's pitched for us," Musick said.
Funk finds a way: Fannett-Metal’s Cole Funk has been the diamond in the rough for the Tiger baseball team. The team holds just two wins on the season, but both of which had major contributions from Funk.
He tossed a one-hitter in a 13-1 win over Shalom Christian in five innings and struck out nine. He also threw another win Thursday, coming in for relief in the final three innings of Fannett-Metal’s 10-9 comeback victory over Tussey Mountain.
He shut out Tussey in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the win, all the while batting 3-for-4 while bringing in two RBIs.
One hitters: Southern Fulton’s Cooper Grove threw a one-hitter through four innings against Fannett-Metal. He struck out six and walked four.
Forbes Road’s Brycen Hohman allowed just one hit through five innings in a tough 6-4 loss to Southern Huntingdon.
Up-and-coming freshman: Shippensburg freshman Adam Maring was on the short list for the few underclassmen with varsity potential for the Shippensburg baseball team.
He proved why on Wednesday at the plate. He went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the Greyhounds 12-2 win over Big Spring.
Close 'em out: Greencastle-Antrim baseball boasts a talented pitching rotation, but the Blue Devils also hold an ace for the latter part of the game as well.
Matt Kline has two saves on the season, including a nail-biter over Waynesboro last week where he denied the Indians a rally with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to lock in a 7-5 win. He struck out two and induced an infield fly to close out the game.
The Blue Devils remain undefeated this season thanks to wins over Waynesboro, James Buchanan and Spring Grove.
Waynesboro still hot: The excitement from Waynesboro's 4-0 start may be wearing off, but it's no reason to put the Indians on the back burner just yet.
Despite Waynesboro's two losses this week, the team had the winning runs on base in both instances, but couldn't bring them in. Coach Greg Chandler said in the two losses his team simply "waited too long to play."
With a roster cluttered with underclassmen, inexperience has plagued the Indians in their losses so far. But as the season goes on and rhythms are established it is likely the Waynesboro baseball team will continue to be a threat in the Mid Penn Colonial Division.
