PLAYOFFS: Chambersburg's District 3-AAAA baseball final to be shown on live stream

The last time the Chambersburg Trojans won a District 3 Class AAAA baseball title came in 2009. The scene was Sovereign Bank Park in York and they had to rally for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Central Dauphin, 6-5.

On Thursday at 4:30 p.m., the Trojans (15-8) will be back in York at the same site – the field is now named Santander Stadium – to take on No. 1 seed Hempfield (22-3), and Chambersburg will be shooting for its 12th district championship.

The other area team playing Thursday is the Greencastle-Antrim softball team. The Blue Devils (15-8) take on Conrad Weiser (20-4) for third place in Class AAA – the winner gets a berth in the PIAA Tournament and the loser is finished. The game is at Carlisle High School at 4 p.m.

There are a couple of interesting similarities to 2009 for Chambersburg. In that year, it defeated Hempfield 4-0 in the quarterfinals and Warwick 5-4 in 13 innings in the semifinals.

The Trojans just beat Warwick 6-1 in the semifinals Tuesday night.

In 2009, Chambersburg had won 10 of 11 games before the district final; this year the Trojans have won five of their last six.

Pitching has been the team's biggest asset for the season, and in the last two games the Chambersburg pitchers have allowed only nine hits – five by Austin Suders in a 6-2 win over Mechanicsburg in the quarterfinals and four by Tristan Daywalt in the win over Warwick.

Suders (3-5, 1.53 earned run average) is expected to get the call for the championship game. But Drew Betz (4-1, 0.70 ERA) could also be a factor.

The Trojans have two starters hitting at least .300 – Betz (.343) at second base, and Suders (.300, pitcher or DH), while Suders (16) and first baseman Hunter Brindle (14) lead in runs batted in.
