MDCC CHAMPIONSHIPS: Shalom Christian wins girls soccer title, baseball falls

SCOTLAND >> Tori Yoder had her foot in four of Shalom Christian's five goals, and the Flames used an early second-half surge to pull away from Grace Academy for a 5-1 win in the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference girls soccer tournament final on Monday at the Winebrenner Theological Center.

The Flames, who end their season with a perfect 16-0 record, got started in the eighth minute when Yoder crashed the net off a rebound and scored. Then in the 34th minute, Lexy Poe curled a corner kick into the back of the net, untouched, to give Shalom a 2-0 lead.

Flames coach Peter Holdaway said, "Grace played a very tough game, and it took us a while to adjust. But once we did, we played very well as a unit."

The Flames opened things up in a span of four minutes in the second half. Yoder found Brooke Emge in the 51st minute to give Shalom a 3-0 lead, then Yoder scored in the 53rd and 55th minutes on assists by Poe and Emge, respectively.

"Tori played well up front, so did Lexy, and our midfield played well together," Holdaway said. "McKenzi Maun also had some nice saves in goal. It was a nice way to end an undefeated season."
