DISTRICT 3 PLAYOFFS: 7 area teams receive tournament pairings

A total of seven Franklin County teams have qualified for the District 3 playoffs – four in softball and three in baseball – as pairings were released Thursday afternoon.

Baseball playoffs begin Monday at the home of the highest-seeded team.

Chambersburg is the only local team in Class AAAA. The No. 10-seeded Trojans (13-7) will face a familiar opponent in the first round, playing No. 7 Lower Dauphin (15-5) at Nye Field in Hummelstown at 4:30.

It will be the third time in the last four years that Chambersburg will hit LD in the first round, all three times at Nye Field, and the Falcons have prevailed in the two previous meetings – 2-0 in 2012 and 2-1 in eight innings last year.

In Class AAA, Shippensburg (16-4) gained the No. 1 seed, and the Greyhounds' prize is a date against the ace pitcher of No. 16 Middletown (11-9), Nathan Ocker. On Tuesday, Ocker held Greencastle-Antrim to one hit in eight innings. Ship will play at 4:30.

Speaking of Greencastle, the No. 12 Blue Devils (11-8) will be on the road against No. 5 Lampeter-Strasburg (13-8) for a 7 p.m. game.

Softball, which plays its first-round games on Tuesday, is putting the opening-round games at the home field of the higher seed. Previously, all softball playoffs were at neutral fields.

Chambersburg (13-7) earned the No. 10 seed, which sends the Trojans to play at No. 7 Central York (20-2) at 4:30. Also in Class AAAA, No. 12 Shippensburg (15-5) travels to play No. 5 Hempfield (16-6). The Lady Hounds are the defending district champions, but that was in Class AAA.

In Class AAA, both area teams earned high-enough seeds to play home games. No. 5 James Buchanan (17-3) will take on No. 12 Garden Spot (10-10) at 4:30, and No. 6 Greencastle (13-7) will play against No. 11 Dover (11-7).

Quarterfinal games in both baseball and softball are scheduled for Thursday at neutral fields.
