BASEBALL: Saturday's roundup, Greencastle captures Muhlenberg tournament title

LAURENDALE >> Greencastle-Antrim's baseball team put it all together Saturday to win the championship of the Muhlenberg Tournament.

The Blue Devils (8-4) piled up 29 hits and 19 runs, made only one error all day and their pitchers gave up only three runs and 11 hits. G-A beat Fleetwood 12-1 in the first game and then the host Muhls 7-2 in the final.

"Waynesboro took it to us Thursday, so that was our message to the guys: You have to compete hard," Blue Devil coach Eric Shaner said. "Today, we did. It was nice for them to get rewarded with a trophy after a two-hour bus ride."

In the opener, Derek Measell hurled a seven-hitter with eight strikeouts and was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Other standout G-A batters included Bailey Parker (3-for-5, 3 RBIs), Myles Gayman (3-for-5, 3 runs), and Quin Ambeault and Matt Kline (2-for-4, 1 RBI).

In the second game, Kline limited Muhlenberg to four singles and fanned six, and was 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two runs knocked in. Kurt Hansen was 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Austin Branchman and Dillon Morgan each had two hits.

"The pitching's been there all year; if we get this kind of defense we could be tough," Shaner said.

MCCONNELLSBURG 6, JAMES BUCHANAN 5 >> James Buchanan scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to tie it up, but McConnellsburg produced a run in the bottom of the 10th to capture a 6-5 non-league win Saturday night.

"It was a great game," Spartan coach Brian Ramsey said. "We played a solid game, but we were fortunate to come out on top. This is the kind of game that will prepare us for later in the season."

The Rockets (3-8) trailed by a run going into the seventh, but a double by Zane Bray knotted the game at 5-5.

In the 10th, JT Barnard singled, Dustin Welsh walked and Logan singled to load the bases for McConnellsburg (11-2). Landon Richards then hit a fly ball to center that was dropped, but the run would have scored on a sacrifice fly regardless.

Garrison Crouse pitched two hitless innings and struck out four to earn the win for the Spartans, while Taylor Souders pitched the first eight innings.

"Taylor was up a little early and JB scored three in the first inning," Ramsey said. "But he settled down."

For JB, Jared Pine was 2-for-5. For McConnellsburg, Barnard, Little and Taylor Souders were each 3-for-5, and Dylan Everts had two hits.

In the big inning, the Rockets needed only three hits. Waynesboro (5-8) supplied five walks, two hit batters, a balk that scored a run and three errors.

"We should have been out of that inning with a 2-1 score," Indian coach Greg Chandler said. "It turned into the inning from heck."

Austin Hanshew scored Waynesboro's only run after he singled and scored on an error.
