BASEBALL: Thursday's roundup, 5-run fifth inning lifts Shippensburg over Boiling Springs

SHIPPENSBURG >> Through the first four innings of Thursday's game, Shippensburg's baseball team found itself trailing Boiling Springs.

But that changed quickly in the fifth. The Greyhounds exploded for five runs and pulled away for a 7-2 Mid Penn Colonial Division win.

Trailing 2-1, the Hounds (6-2, 3-1 MPC) got a leadoff double by Zane Hershey, and after a Daulton Brenize walk, Cordell Shannon hit a single to tie the game at two. Nate Reiner was next, and he came through with a two-run double to give Ship its first lead of the game. Brandt Swartz added an RBI single and Matt Frick a run-scoring double to cap off the big inning for the Greyhounds.

"It was nice to get some big hits late and come back from our loss (to Greencastle)," Shippensburg coach Nate Rosenberry said. "The kids played well and did a nice job. Hopefully we can gain some momentum from this."

Starter Teagan Staver improved to 3-0 on the season, giving up two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in a complete-game performance. Brenize finished 2-for-3 and scored twice, and Frick finished 2-for-2.

A bunt by Austin Branchman was thrown away and Derek Measell bunted the runners up. Spencer Meyers plated a run with a sacrifice fly, Matt Christman singled and Myles Gayman tripled to right-center to score two more runs. Kurt Hansen finished it off with an RBI base hit.

"We're still not playing well in the field (4 errors)," G-A coach Eric Shaner said, "especially on ground balls. But we did get bunts down and put pressure on their defense. Big Spring did a nice job with two strikes."

The Bulldogs got 11 hits off Kline, but he got some key strikeouts to limit the damage and none of the runs were earned.
