BASEBALL: Previously winless Carlisle edges Chambersburg, 4-3

CARLISLE >> Chambersburg gave up three runs to Carlisle in the second inning of a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division baseball game Thursday afternoon and never caught up to the Thundering Herd, who won their first game of the season, 4-3.

Carlisle (1-6, 1-3 MPC) led 3-0 and then 4-1 after the fourth inning, and the Trojans (4-4, 2-3 MPC) could only get within one run.

"It's the same thing I've said in practically all of our losses," Chambersburg coach Bob Thomas said. "We had plenty of opportunities, but we were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position."

The Trojans scored a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Brindle, and Carlin Christian's double plated a run in the fifth to make it 4-2.

In the top of the seventh against winning pitcher Billy Burger, Christian walked with two outs and raced home on a triple by Tristan Daywalt. But Burger got the next batter on a swinging strike three out of the strike zone to end the game.

Burger allowed six hits and three walks and fanned seven. For Chambersburg, Austin Suders pitched five innings and allowed three hits, three walks and two earned runs. Drew Betz pitched one inning and struck out the side.

Thomas said, "We only had two errors, but each of them let in a run."
