H.S. Highlights: JB rebounds with non-league win
Just one night prior, James Buchanan's softball team suffered a tough defeat, watching Greencastle-Antrim celebrate after a walk-off home run.
But Friday, the Rockets came out on fire in a non-league victory over Spring Mills, 7-2.
The Cardinals went up 2-0 after the top of the first inning, but James Buchanan quickly responded, tying it up after the first.
"I knew we'd be able to come back," JB centerfielder Brooke Pittman said. "We were all pretty hyped about the game, so I wasn't worried about that. Bouncing back from (Thursday's game), we did a really great job of that. I'm really proud of my team for doing that."
The Rockets (4-1) went on to score at least one run in each of the next four innings, and they racked up 12 hits on the day.
Pittman led the hitting frenzy, going 4-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Taryn Miller and Nina Shatzer each had a pair of hits.
THRILLING FINISH
Late in Friday's softball game, Greencastle-Antrim coach Mark DeCarli noticed a lapse and decided to take a risk in a non-league game with Littlestown.
“Morgan (Wagaman) was on third with two outs, and I told her the catcher wasn’t paying attention,” DeCarli said. “I told her if she lobs it back to the pitcher, just take off."
Wagaman did just that, stealing home in the top of the seventh inning. It ended up being a game-winning run in a 3-2 victory for a second-straight, one-run win for the Blue Devils.
“This was another big win against a very good Littlestown team,” DeCarli said. “That’s the second quality team we’ve beaten in a row. The girls are finding their stride. We have a big division game versus Shippensburg on Tuesday, so hopefully we’ll keep this going.”
Greencastle (3-2) got two hits apiece from Jess Root, Wagaman and Alison Shockey.

Southern Fulton 4-12, Everett 1-10: Trent Rider pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks in the opener, and also belted an RBI triple for the Indians (7-1, 7-1 SHL, 7-0 ICC). In the second game, SF took a 12-4 lead before the Warriors got closer. Cooper Grove was the winning pitcher, Dylan Gordon was 3-for-4 and Dylan Ensor was 2-for-2.
"Our offense is starting to heat up and hit the way they are capable of," Indian coach Dustin Fischer said.
Boys tennis
State College 5, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans (2-7, 0-4 MPC) dropped their seventh straight match. Andrew Mooney had a heck of a battle at No. 3 singles with the Little Lions’ Terrence Li, who pulled out a 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 victory. At No. 2 doubles, Chambersburg’s Josh Muldowney and Derek Briggs fell 6-3, 6-3.
Girls soccer
Shalom Christian 5, Carroll Christian 1: The Flames have averaged five goals per game and they hit it again Friday night in a non-league win over Carroll Christian. Brooke Emge notched three goals - two of them assisted by Lexy Poe - and Poe and Lydia Harris also scored goals. Shalom racked up a 31-5 advantage in shots.
