Mercersburg earns sweep

The Mercersburg Academy baseball team jumped into Mid-Atlantic Prep League play with a doubleheader against Blair Academy, but the Blue Storm was prepared with hot bats and strong pitching to lead the way. Mercerburg beat Blair 15-2 in five innings, then 15-0 in three innings to complete the sweep.

Beau Lowery threw a complete game in Game 1, and struck out seven, while Jake Rist took the mound in Game 2 and also struck out seven in three innings. Rist completed the game with a 0.67 WHIP and allowed two hits.

The Blue Storm (8-2, 2-0 MAPL) rattled off 15 hits in Game 1 and nine in Game 2, scoring nine runs in the second and first innings of each game respectively. Carlos Mancilla hit a home run in the second inning of Game 1 as Mercersburg jumped to a comfortable lead. Dylan Bartlett hit a two-run home run, and Will Oakley had two RBIs in the first game, while Jayvien Sandridge, Mancilla and Brandon Thomas each had three RBIs in Game 2.

Baseball

Shalom wins tournament: Shalom Christian earned a pair of wins Saturday to capture the Shenandoah Valley Tournament. The Flames (3-3) dusted Carroll Christian 20-2 in the first round, then edge the host team 1-0 in the final. In the five-inning championship game, Colby Maun throttled the Patriots on just two hits while striking out eight. The only run came in the first inning when Jacob Nicholas singled in Mikey Wright.

Wright, Maun, Tobin King and Aden Priest were named to the all-tournament team.

Softball

Blair 16-16, Mercersburg 0-0: Mercersburg was shut out in a MAPL doubleheader against Blair Academy, which scored 16 runs in two three-innings games. CJ Walker and Mallory Sipes took the losses for Mercersburg (0-3, 0-2 MAPL, 0-1 IPSL).

Girls lacrosse

Blair 13, Mercersburg 8: Mercersburg dropped a MAPL game to Blair with a 13-8 loss. Mercersburg (1-4, 0-2 MAPL) got 3 goals from Elizabeth Fitzgerald and 2 each from Meghan Scott and Maddie Surmacz, while Sarah Perryman had one.

Boys lacrosse

Mercersburg 12, Blair 6: The Blue Storm opened MAPL play with a 12-6 win over rival Blair. Mercersburg is now 3-2 and 1-0 in the MAPL.

Boys tennis

Blair 5, Mercersburg 2: Mercersburg (1-3, 0-2 MAPL) won two of three doubles matches with No. 1 and No. 2 doubles pairs of Elliot Hicks-Saaman Ghodsi, and Shayan Ghodsi-John Huang earning wins, respectively. Hicks was the only Mercersburg singles player to win a match, granting Blair the five points it needed to lock in the MAPL victory.
